Ride My See Saw

It was another night of The Angel Family does things on the cheap. :-)

The Hollywood Bowl ticket prices vary from very expensive to the cheap seats, up at the top.

Minus the time it takes to ride all those escalators, the view is excellent up there.

Hubby and I were trying to connect with a girl I grew up with. Unfortunately she was much lower down and I despaired of finding her during the Intermission.

Amazingly, I managed to do my business and then run down to section G2 and there she was, with relatives and friends.

We had something like 5 minutes to hug and talk, but we did promise to get together sometime (like this summer)

On to the concert itself.

I haven't seen the Moody Blues since we saw them at the Hollywood Bowl in like 1994. If I remember right, the tickets were $50 for box seats. We went with my Sister and a friend and I decided that the set list was always the same and I did not want to spend any more money to see the same show. I held my promise over these decades, but something about it being 50 years since Days of Future Passed was released, made me come this evening. Maybe it was the fact that my Son is named for the lead singer. Ha!

Opening night at the Bowl is always special and this one was no exception. The money goes to help the next generation of children, afford a music education and I am so behind that. So they start with a piece played by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and then they brought in 25 youngsters from the YOLA (Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles). They played well and set us up for the concert.

I knew The Moody Blues would go with most of what they normally play on tour and it was heavy with 80's tunes. Having not heard them in years, it was good to hear them played once again. There was a tune I never heard called "Nervous" and I am sure they played it, because it was written by John Lodge.

Since we had the entire Days of Future Passed album played in the second set, we finally got a song written by Mike Pinder and the crowd knew what an exception this was. They were quite vocal about singing and some were dancing during the performance by John Lodge. Let me state for the record that some of my favorite Moody blues songs are indeed written by Mike Pinder and IMHO he is sorely missed by this fan.

When I was in college I used to go to the Library and put on Seventh Soujourn and my absolute favorite songs from that record were Mike's. Lost in a Lost World and Free Man. I real shame that they lost him to his demons, because he was so much a part of the Moody sound in the first round...but I digress.

All in all, for men in their 70's, they put on a great show.

Glad I went.

  1. Cool! Thanks for sharing this.

I've gone to many a Moodies show in my day, usually at one of the A.C. casinos when A.C. (in better days for A.C. overall). I haven't been to see them in many years now, though. I may have gone once after Ray Thomas retired, but that was kind of it for me. I love all their songs, especially the classic hits of course, but not having Ray there to do Legend of a Mind and other songs of his somehow indicated it was time for me to stop too.

But this show would have been very cool to see with the Pinder songs. Maybe it will show up on youtube?... Hint, hint.

I got going to Moodies shows because of a good friend who is "their #1 fan" as the saying goes. Always a great show. ?The fact that I stopped going after Ray left should not be taken in any way as a comment on the others or the songs they still perform. Always an excellent show regardless.

  3. Dim Skip, as I mentioned, I went through that same thing. No Ray Thomas? Ack! I am glad I went to this one, though.

Martha, you would have been shocked to see how many people of limited mobility there were at this show. More power to them, for getting themselves to a concert that is not easy to attend.
