Alphie: RIP

He is gone. Our beloved Alphie has died.

I came into work Tuesday morning and heard the news first thing. My work partner's fish, our unofficial mascot, had died overnight. Alphie hadn't been eating for several weeks now, so we knew it was just a matter of time, but it was still sad to know that this was the ultimate outcome. As the weeks passed, I kept hoping he was getting nutrition via the water, since we continued to feed him the blood worms. I guess not, or if it was, it just wasn't enough.

We decided that the best thing for a fish was to go back to the ocean and so we did a burial at sea...in the men's restroom. I lit a memorial candle and carried it in the procession and we sang "What's It All About". He has officially gone to the great ocean in the sky.

Someday may we meet again, Alphie.

  2. ps. i also know how these things can keep one sane around the work place. even though just the opposite seems true. despite Alphie's demise there is a sense of joy involved, the presence of a living being, no matter how small or communicative or not... to keep one company. company is such an underrated phenomena.

  3. What? I have a GREAT voice and in a bathroom... lol

My only problem is I really don't know some of the words. :-)

No replacement fish...at least for now, which is a shame.

  4. So sorry to hear Alphie's gone, but it sounds like you guys gave him a proper send-off!

I agree with Gina -- critters are a wonderful thing, and I wish we could have more of them at work. My dream job is to do what I do now (coordinate clinical trials) in the School of Vetrinary Medicine's Clinical Research Center. Do cool stuff, AND have your dogs at work with you, along with everybody else's dogs and whatever critters just happen to be around. Absolute perfection.
