Adventsljusstakar - Advent Candle Holder

This is the Third week of Advent. Or as I call it, Pink Candle Week. ;-)

I picked up this lovely Advent Candle Holder back in the early 80's. It's not traditional by American standards, we basically make an Advent Wreath of evergreens, but I loved how simple and yet beautiful it was. I believe it's Scandinavian in origin and from what I found on the Internet, called an Adventsljusstakar. From what I read, the houses have 5 or 7 candled holders in their windows at night, to celebrate the Christmas Season. No idea why some have 7 candles, instead of 5, but I thought I would mention it.

Speaking of which...I really need a new "Pink" candle. Mine is definitely losing it's color.

For any who don't know (like me) my friend finally explained what the pink candle symbolizes...Joy.

I like that.

  1. 3rd Sunday in Advent=Gaudete Sunday, Rejoicing Sunday. I love Advent, for so many reasons, Gaudete Sunday being one of them. I've never seen an Advent candle holder like yours -- it's lovely. And you're right -- you REALLY need a new pink candle. And new purple ones, for that matter. ;-)

  2. Yeah, my purple ones are looking pink and my pink are looking white. lol

I knew you would like Gaudete Sunday, being you sing in the choir and all that. :-)

  3. ...and every time I hear "Gaudete" I always think of this text: Gaudete, gaudete! Christus est natus ex Maria Virgine. Gaudete! It's a lovely chant, and the versicles are quite the tongue-twisters. One of these days I'm going to talk a choir director into doing it for Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve.

  4. Is it obnoxious (probably) for me to put a link to my own Advent post on Gaudate Sunday? And the big joke in churches is -it is ROSE and not pink!

  5. Thanks Fran. I had (obviously) already read it, but others haven't so it's totally cool by me. :-)

  6. Fran: Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for sharing the link to your post. You speak so well to how I view Advent (and how hard it is to really practice Advent). And you even introduced me to a poet I didn't know previously, and whom I think I'm going to like a lot.

May you have a blessed Advent and Christmas.
