Happy New Year (2023)

Happy New Year 2023

Here we are, the ball drops tonight to bring us to another New Year.

In good things, it brings an increase to my Social Security check. In bad news, it took having inflation for the past year, to bring us to this point.

In comparison to others, we seem to be holding our own on things like higher gas and food prices. Where it hits hardest is when going out for dinner or meals on vacation.

What used to cost around $50 now costs close to $100.

To get around that, for the most part, we avoid eating out.

Health wise, we are holding our own and we hope we can manage to travel a bit in the new year. Masking when appropriate and staying safe.

If my project finally finishes up, we will be free from Oswego constraints.

Bring it on!

A Few Of Our Presents

We did not get each other much in the way of Christmas/Hanukkah gifts.

Most of it was chocolate.

One of the biggest things was I got a new Chromecast for the TV.

I also bought a months worth of Acorn TV, so we can watch the 10th Season of Doc Martin and the Christmas Special.

I needed a bigger bag to take out shopping and asked my Husband if we could look for one.

This blue one is what we found. It has a 3rd zippered section for my reading glasses in it.

The blue fabric you see in the photo is a new aqua fit bathing suit. I don't have to connect it in the back and that makes both me and my poor Husband happy.

So, small changes in the angel house.

Hanukkah Is Over For Another Year

Yes, Hanukkah is over for another year.

How you can tell in the angel house? The fact that we have to soak the menorah in hot water, to get the wax off.

It ended up sitting on my counter most of the day, with my Husband coming over to work with it occasionally.

I think part of the problem is the candles are dripping badly.

I actually saw a friend make a similar comment on Facebook, so I know it is not just us.

I believe I have another box of the same brand for next year...sigh.

A Flying Squirrel

On the subject of the current resident of the angel home, here is Makenna getting her gift on Christmas.

From the lovely photo I have provided, you can see she was not impressed with it right off the bat.

I did move it onto the rocking chair she spends the day in and she does smell it, with its lovely cat nip inside.

So I guess it is a win.

Cat Ornaments

There is always a special place on my tree for my cats...past and present.

It started with my first one, who got a cute photo of us holding our baby kitten.

She taught us about parenting and lasted until years after my Son was born.

Shortly after, we picked up a cat from our vet. The cat had been declawed by a Valencia family (don't get me started about declawing a cat) and after torturing the poor thing, they returned her to the vet, because their daughter was alergic to it. We had her for 2 years, but the last few months were terrible for her and she died of something (the vet tested her to try to find out what, but was unsuccessful) Years later, I think it was the declawing that ultimately did her in.

We were afraid to bring another cat into our lives, because of not knowing what she had died of.

Finally in 2009, my son and I broke down and went with a friend of his and chose a cat.

Makenna has been our joy for the past 13 years and we hope for many more.

Her ornament graces our tree, with a red frame.

Being I grew up with a mother who hated cats, my Husband, Son and I have enjoyed the wonder that comes with cat ownership.

Lake Superior Is Beginning To Ice Over

My Water Post For Today.

It has been getting cold up on the Great Lakes and that means freighters will be halted and the Soo Locks will stop working, for their yearly maintenance.

I obviously do not have photos of the frozen lake, but I do have a summer photo of Lake Superior.

You can tell the water is warmer than now, but there is still lots of driftwood up on the shore.

I hope you enjoy.

Merry Christmas (2022)

Merry Christmas from the "Angel" House.

My Son spent 10 days with us in August and this is our punishment. He is not traveling this December.

Honestly, that is just fine for us. COVID-19 does not make travel easy, especially during the holidays.

He bought us a brand new laptop computer, and being he sent it early, we were able to bring it on our trip in October.

It works out well, because it is much lighter than our other laptop.

To all who celebrate, hope Santa brings you what you want.

Ho Ho Ho!

New Advent Candles

I already lamented about the candles I have had for years.

Each one has faded, but the worst was the third Sunday candle, Gaudete Sunday.

It had turned white instead of pink.

I went online and found some candles that would be able to replace them.

They look great!

Just in time for the big day.

Merry Christmas.

Italian Fig Cookies (Cucidati)

Unique and flavorful Italian Fig Cookies (Cucidati)

"Italian Fig Cookies, Cucidati, Sicilian Fig Cookies or Christmas Fig Cookies are a few of the names you might find for this deliciously moist, tender and sweet fruit filled cookie.

With notes of citrus from fresh orange juice and lemon zest, the unique and richly spiced filling is wrapped inside a buttery sugar cookie dough that’s a dream to work with.

Baked in strips then sliced into individual cookies while warm, this method couldn’t be easier. Once cooled the cookies are drizzled with a lemon glaze and sprinkled with traditional holiday nonpareils."

The quote above is what the recipe that I ended up using, said about the cookie.

It is not my families Cucidati, but I spent enough time looking at recipes, that I decided to try THIS one.

Italian Fig Cookies (Cucidati)

Ingredients
For the dough:
½ cup unsalted butter room temperature (113g or 4oz)
¼ cup granulated sugar (55g)
¼ cup light brown sugar packed (56g)
1 large egg room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour (226g)
¼ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt

For the fig filling:

1 cup dried Calimyrna or Mission figs stems removed and diced (6 or 7 ounce package)
½ cup chopped pitted dates finely chopped (or substitute raisins if preferred)
½ cup orange juice fresh squeezed (about 1 orange) (4oz)
⅓ cup diced candied orange peel

2 tablespoons granulated sugar
1 teaspoon lemon zest
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
⅓ cup blanched almonds chopped fine
2 tablespoons dark spiced rum or Grand Marnier orange liqueur

For the lemon glaze:

1 cup powdered sugar sifted (115g)
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice (add more if needed for desired consistency)
Sprinkles for decoration if desired

Instructions

To prepare the dough:

In a large mixing bowl beat the butter on medium-high speed using an electric mixer until smooth and creamy, about 1 minute. Add the granulated sugar and brown sugar and mix until combined. Add the egg and vanilla and blend just until incorporated. Scrape the sides of the bowl and beat again for a few seconds. Whisk together the flour, baking soda and salt. Add the flour mixture to the dough in three additions, mixing on low to incorporate.
Divide the dough in half and form each into a small rectangle. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 3 hours or up to overnight.

To prepare the filling:

In a small saucepan, combine the figs, dates, orange juice, candied orange peel, sugar, lemon zest and cinnamon. Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer for 5 to 8 minutes or until fruit is soft and the mixture is thick. Remove from the heat and add the chopped blanched almonds and 2 tablespoons Grand Marnier, if using. Set aside to cool to room temperature. Cover with plastic wrap once cooled until needed.
To assemble and bake the cookies, preheat oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside. Remove the dough from the refrigerator and allow it to rest for 10-15 minutes before rolling out.
Place a piece of wax or parchment paper (at least 14×10 inches) on a clean work surface. Generously dust the paper with flour. Roll one portion of the dough into a 10×8-inch rectangle. Cut each rectangle into two 10×4-inch strips. Portion 1/4 of the filling down the center of each strip (in a rounded mound). CHILL the dough and filling as is for 10-15 minutes before rolling into cylinders.
Using the parchment paper as a guide, bring one long side of the dough up and over the filling. Repeat with the opposite side forming a tube and enclosing the filling. The dough should overlap slightly on top of the filling. Gently seal the edges.

Carefully transfer the filled strips to the prepared baking sheet placing them seam side down on the pan. Bake for 12 minutes or until lightly browned.
Remove from the oven and immediately slice each strip (using a large thin knife) diagonally into 1-inch pieces. Transfer the cookies to a wire rack to cool.

For the lemon glaze:

Combine the powdered sugar and lemon juice in a small bowl and whisk until smooth.
Drizzle on each cookie then top with colored sprinkles if desired.

My Fall Pumpkins Are Still Here

The one unusual thing in my house is the 3 small pumpkins I bought back in early October.

They decorated my home for the past 3 months and they are still good!

The big pumpkins go bad in November. These did not.

So, using my pottery, I made a display of Fall on the little round table, and I will get rid of the pumpkins in January.

Definitely the best $5 I ever spent.

Ciambelline-Italian Ring Cookies

My aunt on my Dad's side used to make some sort of hard ring cookie at Christmas.

I have no idea if this is close to her recipe, but I figured I would try it.

Ciambelline - Italian Ring Cookies

Ingredients 2- 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup orange juice
1/2 cup vegetable oil
turbinado sugar or granulated sugar-to roll the cookies in

Instructions

In a large bowl, whisk together the flours, baking powder, salt and cinnamon; set aside.
In a small bowl, whisk together the sugar, orange juice and oil.
Combine the wet ingredients with the flour mixture. Stir together until the dough comes together. The dough should be a little softer than a pasta frolla dough.
Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let it rest in the refrigerator for about 20 minutes.
While the dough is resting, preheat the oven to 350 F and line your baking sheets with parchment paper. I lined two as you want to leave some space between the cookies as they spread while they bake.
Take out the dough from the refrigerator and put on a clean counter. Start to take out portions of the dough and roll them into cylinders about 5 inches long.
Roll each cylinder in some sugar and form into a ring by bringing the ends together and pinching them softly. Place each ring on the tray.
Bake for about 15-20 minutes or until golden.

Hanukkah From The Outside To The Inside (2022)

This is Night 2 of Hanukkah.

There was a beautiful sunset going on, so I stepped outside and took a photo through the front window.

If you look close, you can even see my Husband sitting in his favorite chair.

Wishing all who celebrate, a very Happy Hanukkah.

Stormy Winter Day In Oswego, Take 2

My Water Post For Today.

Since I showed off Lake Michigan, when I left Oswego in 2013, I went and found one from that same time of year, in Oswego.

"We have had some wild weather the past week and one of the days, I went out to another place I hardly visit, to take some photos.

This one shows off the wave action and a bonus. Off in the distance, you can see Oswego Light House, in the harbor."

I hope you enjoy.

Godspeed P-22

I worked on both sides of Griffith Park, so the mountains that were P-22's habitat, were well known to me.

As so many have stated before, I never saw him on the prowl...but I knew he was there.

I was so saddened to hear that he is no longer alive.

It was so comforting to know that a mountain lion had lived his life in that small area of land for 12 years.

He was usually not seen, up until recently. His behavior changed and it caused the wildlife people to go out and try to catch him.

Due to being hit potentially by a car, he was not the mountain lion we all knew. He started going after small dogs, because I am sure they were easier to catch in his less than primo condition.

After extensive testing, they decided to euthanize him on Saturday.

We the residents of Los Angeles, are heartbroken.

He was a one of a kind cat.

It was 9 years ago this week, that I flew home from my semester in Oswego.

They had to de-ice the plane in Syracuse, to get us off the ground.

Of course, Chicago is used to dealing with these things, too and I could tell from this view, that I was going to get home to my family.

I did and I finished that part of my degree. Now for the final work.

Probably the beginning of next year, with luck.

In case you care, that is Lake Michigan.

Bivalent Booster (Check)

Since we had COVID-19 back in September, we have held off getting the new Bivalent Booster.

They say that natural immunity wanes after about 3 months, so if that is true, it was time.

My OB/GYN had COVID-19 back in August and he said he was planning to get his booster in November, so at least I had confirmation from a medical professional.

Amazingly, it is so easy to do now days. Not like how hard it was 2 years ago.

We are ready for the winter months.

The 2022 Holiday Card

This is the Holiday Card for 2022.

I went with an online company this year, but it was expensive. So I only bought 40 of them and ended up needing 53.

Oh well, some people got regular cards.

I feel bad about that, but that is life.

The photos are: (from the left, the three of us at the Skirball exhibit on Jewish Deli's. The two of us at the Grand Canyon, and Makenna)

It was a bit challenging, since they wanted it to look like Polaroid pictures...but I think they came out OK.

Langer's Deli

My Husband had to go to an appointment in the Westlake area of Los Angeles.

I immediately said to him, hey, let's go to Langer's for lunch.

I looked at Google Maps and decided that the two areas were a long distance apart in a not so nice area, and so I drove him over.

We took the older car, just to be sure we did not have it broken into.

We got to Langer's right before noon and had a wonderful sandwich each. He got a number 19 and I got a number 6.

We split a yummy cheesecake, instead of getting fries or soup.

The bill for two sandwiches, two drinks and the cheesecake was $75 without tip.

It was never cheap, but it was definitely not quite this expensive.

Gaudete Sunday

I still don't go to Church, due to COVID-19, but I was dropping off food for the poor and stopped in.

It was nice to be there, fully masked, though most others were not.

I got a few photographs of the Church and when I went to take a picture of the advent wreath, there was this huge presentation for Our Lady of Guadalupe.

I assume the Spanish Mass, later in the day, would honor her.

It was nice and of course Gaudete Sunday (AKA Pink Candle Sunday) was also celebrated. You can see the advent wreath, behind the display.

In The Woods At Skagway

My Water Post For Today.

Skagway, Alaska is on todays agenda. :-)

This photo is of the river we followed for much of the beginning of the journey.

We did eventually cross the river, but not then.

Such lovely trees and nature in Skagway and I am sure that when the trees leafed out, it was spectacular.

Still Being Drawn To Ceramics

I got these two little pieces at the ceramics show a month ago.

They were free and I believe I get the most joy out of them.

From what I understand, they are decorated with a ceramic "sticker".

You then fire them up with a clear coat of glaze.

Kind of a cheating way to do things, but they are so cute!

My Business Card

This is such a hard time COVID-19 wise, to use my business cards.

I had them printed up for handing out to people at places like the gym and Senior Center.

In spite of that fact, I have taken a photo of it and posted it around the Facebook world.

I just hope I have time to get them out to people who are seniors and who do not log into Facebook.

Every time another month passes, the COVID-19 world changes.

In good news, KTLA reported that train travel is up this holiday season. I feel like I am at the head of a trend.

Ho, Ho, Ho! Holiday Cheer

Due to the fact that our Social Security checks won't arrive until the very end of the month, I had to cover a check that will be withdrawn before that date.

I rounded up cash (which was for my hairdresser and us) and brought it over to the bank.

Being it was cash, I went inside the bank and found this beautiful Christmas tree in the waiting area.

Did my banking and photographed the lovely tree.

Beat the heck out of going to the atm machine out in the cold.

A Sunset Between Storms

I went outside to water the plants and what do I see?

Lots of clouds around our area and the sun lighting them up.

It was quite a show, for about 10 minutes and I managed to capture a few images.

We are not supposed to get rain until the weekend, but those clouds were telling a different story...at least to me.

Thank you for giving me something to admire, as I did my watering.

The Holidays (2022)

It took a week to accomplish, but here it is. Our house this Holiday season.

Most is similar to other years, except the tree on the credenza.

To bring it into the holiday mood, I hung a few ornaments on it, including the Shuttlecraft from Star Trek.

I always feel better having Mr. Spock wishing us a happy holiday.

I think it came out nice in its cut back form.

Train Travel Help Is Now Live

My website, the companion to my paper on Train Travel, is now live.

It has taken months to get it approved by my advisor, but I finally got it.

You can check out the website here. traintravelhelp.com/

I am very pleased with it, all in all.

Susquehana River Back In 2015

My Water Post For Today.

I needed to check in with the Crescent train trip that we took back in 2015.

As I was zipping through the photos, I found this one.

A bit of detective work and I found out that this is the mouth of the Susquehana River.

After Wilmington, Delaware and before Baltimore, Maryland.

Worth the time I spent researching it.

A Cold And Windy December Day

December started with rain for our area of Southern California.

Talk about no light coming our way and lots of heat going.

It was only .19 inches, but it felt like more.

Makenna knows how to deal with days like this...sleep.

Wish I had that option.

A Bad Day On The Santa Clarita Roads

There are always accidents where the I-5 Freeway and the 14 Freeway come together, but this one was extreme.

One accident happened on the lower level of the truck route and then another truck loses control and falls from the upper connector, right onto the first truck.

I am shocked!

Hopefully the video will play for you. Truck Accident.

Thanks to ABC7 for the footage.

The Tree Is Up

All right! The tree is decorated and the angel has been placed on the top of it.

We don't have the boxes out of our garage, yet and that is why Hanukkah is not finished on the credenza and neither is the fireplace, with its 2 nutcrackers and stockings to place.

I figure by this weekend, we will have it all together.

At least when I worked I had an excuse. Now days, it's just age that gets to me. :-)

No matter what, santa will find us.

A Thanksgiving Gift

My final nod to Thanksgiving, was the appearance of my Magic "Son".

He came up to the area because he was going to visit with his parents, and then take them to Las Vegas for the weekend.

They still live right down the block from us.

He spent an hour with us and we masked the entire time.

Our life. Which is not totally post-covid yet, nor should it change.

It was good to see him in person.

The Background On The Crust Of The Apple Pie

A few months ago I bought a pie cutter (it's the red plastic object in the second photo).

I wanted to use it and so I decided to make a 2 crust apple pie.

You can see the final photo with the cut outs on top.

The problem is that it was difficult to handle and to even cut the pattern out.

I am not sure if I will do it again. The crust came out very dry and brittle.

All in all, it was an interesting experience.

Lights (2022)

We have had these LED lights since 2009 and so far, no strings have failed.

I am so pleased with them.

They went up on Sunday and minus the wreath above the garage, it is basically what you are used to.

Neither of us can reach that top area without pulling out a broken ladder to use, and I don't want to have to deal with it.

I don't think anyone cares, anyway.

My Husband wants to ask a taller neighbor. I don't think its a big deal, and would prefer not having to get it down off the house, at the end of the season.

Happy Holiday Season.

Alaska Cruising

My Water Post For Today.

Who knew we would get this beautiful image, while cruising through the Inside Passage of Alaska at sunset.

An unforgettable part of our Alaska journey.

Seeing such calm water and little islands along the way.

You can understand why people would move to the area, for the beauty and solitude.

Turkey Cooked On It's Breast

Here are two views of our Thanksgiving Turkey.

We heard that starting it in a 420 degree oven for 20 minutes and then fliping it onto its back and lower the temp to 325 degrees, is the way to go.

The top photo is of the nice and crisp bottom of the turkey.

The bottom photo is of the breast. See how sad it looks?

Somehow, I will have to split the difference and allow the breast to brown up, at the end of cooking.

Otherwise, it was good.

Popovers

I bought popovers from King Arthur Flour, and I decided to make them for Thanksgiving Dinner.

My first mistake was using cupcake papers. They ended up sticking to the popovers.

They also mention in recipes that heating the pan for 2 minutes will make them not fall over.

I was not aware of this and you can see some of them fell over a bit.

Otherwise, they were yummy.

Thanksgiving (2022)

Here it is, the full Thanksgiving dinner at the angel house.

Turkey, stuffing, scalloped potatoes, green beans, popover buns, gravy, and cranberries.

You can see the apple pie at the very end of the table.

I will put a candle in the middle and sing to the birthday boy later in the evening...so no photos of that.

Boy, am I tired.

Happy Thanksgiving (2022)

Here we are again, just our little family will gather for Thanksgiving.

Myself, my Husband (whose birthday it is today), Makenna and a visit for a few minutes from my Magic "Son".

We made the stuffing ahead of time and we just need to place it into the oven to cook.

As I mentioned before, my Husband won a turkey. It will cook in the oven today, along with the stuffing.

I hope to bake an apple pie. If I get it done Wednesday night, a photo of it will grace this blog.

Otherwise, look for it on Friday.

Makenna Has No Idea That Tomorrow Is Turkey Day

Makenna has not been hanging out with us for the past few weeks.

The time change has definitely reset her tummy clock and so she is still totally off with her food.

She hangs out in the den and we miss her on the ottoman.

Maybe we will invite her to Turkey Dinner on Thursday.

Glad for winter coming, but sad at the same time.

A Gift From My College

My Department at Oswego had an open house for the students in the Communication Studies Department.

I, of course, could not attend the event.

They offered their "Off Campus" students a chance to get the free gifts they were giving out.

I did not know what they had, but I said yes to the message.

Then I totally forgot I did so.

On Monday I got a fairly large package from the school and this is what was in it.

A really lovely cup for either water or coffee.

A reusable straw to drink from it.

A note pad and a pen.

I am quite pleased with the gifts.

Ventura Harbor

My Water Post For Today.

I never did get to Ventura this summer.

I am so sorry about that, especially since I did not get to see my work friend.

This trip in 2021 brings back so many memories.

I keep hoping I get out his way soon.

Seafood City Santa Clarita

It's the big news in Santa Clarita.

We got ourselves an Asian Market called Seafood City.

It was started for Filipino's, but they have obviously added other Asian food, and as you can see, it is quite large.

I checked out their huge fish department and I know that moving forward, I will have a place to buy quality fish products.

They also have packaged meat, great produce and packaged meals to grab and go.

On top of cooking the food yourself, they have a counter called Grill City and you can order all sorts of food and either eat it there, or bring it to go.

I was impressed beyond belief.

Igniter

We bought this BBQ a year ago and we have had several problems with it.

The latest was that our igniter no longer worked.

What the heck!

My Brother-in-law had mentioned always check Youtube. Someone, somewhere has had this same problem and solved it.

So I did. Amazingly, I did not even have to run the video. The still for it had a battery being changed.

I said to my Husband, it has a battery?

He went out, took off the igniter and there was a battery.

A two minute fix.

I am so happy.
