Lafayette Blvd, South Bend

Whenever I pass through South Bend, Indiana, I think of Pete Buttigieg, and his book "The Shortest Way Home".

He and his family live in Michigan now, but I learned so much about South Bend, 5 years ago, reading that book about his years as Mayor.

South Bend is one of the rust belt cities. There is still so much to be done, but there are new buildings up and I would appreciate seeing them.

This view, from the train, goes straight down Lafayette Blvd, right to the downtown area.

Unfortunately, the train passes the "not so nice" areas of South Bend.

Sometime, I would love to make a stop there, and check it out.

  1. Not so nice as in, more poverty and crime, so not an area for visitors from elsewhere?

  2. I don't know. As a general rule, trains pass through industrial areas of a city. South Bend seems to be one of them. But further north is Notre Dame University, so it gets better.
