New York Snow

Snow of a different kind.

My brother in law viewed my pitiful attempt at a snow post last week and decided to show off what a REAL storm puts down. I got a laugh out of it and decided to share it with you all.

Here is my sister's house, full of the snow from the storm last Wednesday. It's not the worst one they have had, but it is definitely snow and they had to do quite a bit of snow removal, to get the car out. I hope he did this by snow blower.

I also hope the snow plows had already gone through the neighborhood, before he did the apron at the front of the driveway. I always hated opening up the driveway and watching the snow plow push the snow right back in.

I am glad you got the snow moved.

I hope it is starting to melt.

  1. I also hope the snow plows had already gone through the neighborhood, before he did the apron at the front of the driveway. I always hated opening up the driveway and watching the snow plow push the snow right back in.

This is why one should always try to blow/plow/shovel a good bit extra on the street end of the driveway on the side from which the municipal street plows will be coming along. Clear a good yard to two yards off of the road and the edge of the road as much as possible in that direction and then the plowback will be minimal. Takes a little extra work, of course, but well worth it.

And hey, if you have a street-adjacent mailbox and it happens to be in that general vicinity you kind of have to do it anyway. So if you're ever moving a street-based mailbox for any reason or just installing one for the first time, that's something to consider.

The storm a couple/few weeks ago (12") was much worse than the one the other day (only 6" here in NJ for anyone reading who isn't hep to where I live). While the 12" one was not anywhere near the worst we've ever gotten as far as the officially reported amount (we've had 20"+ on rare occasions, but it seemed like they were ALL last winter!) the strong winds caused massive drifting. It was the first time I was ever unable to plow my own driveway (with a 16HP lawn tractor with front-mounted snowblade), not to mention the two or three neighbors I would normally do. I measured a 30" drift in the driveway.

So when the snow is twice the height of your 15" tall snowblade, that makes it difficult (although there are methodological tricks that help, especially if the snow is more dry and fluffy than it is wet and heavy). But mostly you have to be willing/able to plow WHILE it's still snowing so as to prevent things getting out of control, but who wants to be plowing literally all night if that's the timing of the storm?

The 30" drift btw was actually an extension of the 40" drift on the lawn in front of the house that just continued across and through the main part of the driveway. I tried to plow what I could, just enough to get a vehicle in or out, but had to give up as you can only push so much snow so far and then you're just stuck behind your own massive built up and heavily compacted snowpile that still isn't actually off the driveway.

Luckily I didn't need to be anywhere right away and a neighbor (whose driveway I normally do) got another friend of his with a large pickup and plow to eventually come do a few swipes to clear it good enough for me. Other neighbors had to pay for similar service, but you do what you gotta do.

Of course, I'm sure I don't really need to be telling YOU any of this, Angel!... Just sayin'. (Having said all that I still enjoyed your own documented massive recent snowfall btw.) Also, I can tell just by looking at the smooth vertical edge of the snow in the picture that, yes, it was snowblown.

  2. Actually no, The plow only came through once during the night. What you don't see in this picture is the additional 12 foot in front of the driveway I had to clear to get out to what could laughingly be called a road. Thankfully the second "Beast of Brentwood" proved up to the challenge for the second time in just a few weeks. Yep, some people hop up cars and others hop up snowthrowers. The result speak for itself. After 4 and a half hours of throwing(gotta help thy neighbor y'know) I had just gotten back in the house and the town GPS goes off and here comes the plow for the second and third run of the day. Didn't lay down any sand or CACL though so we have an ice skating rink out front that easily rivals Rock.Center. Good thing I have no interest in fire arms but a bit of C-4.......

  4. Geoff: I had to cut out the front part of the photo so I could obscure your license enough for my personal use on an Internet site. It was much more dramatic, of course, but being I still don't have Photoshop here on this computer, I did what I could.

Sorry to hear it wasn't melting out there.

Dim Skip: Wow, you actually had to have someone else come for that blizzard a few weeks ago? That is something, cause I know you are usually the go to guy in your neck of the woods (and I use that literally).
