Views Of A Work Life At Sunset Blvd.

On the Thursday before our last day working at Sunset Blvd, I took an hour out of my busy day to photograph the many different places I called home. We are talking 12 different locations during a 32 1/2 year career.

That is a move every 3 years, on average. :-)

This collage is a montage of 8 of those locations and I call it a window view of my work life. I abbreviated my Library years into the first Library location only, but there were 5 in all. Note that one of these included a 3 month lay off period. I ended up hired as a temp PA in the News Department, which was also windowless.

My first Broadcasting Job: Subscriber Services Representative!
I was located on the first floor of the Administration Building. Photo on the far left top. I had a window! I was so happy! Well I didn't keep that window for long...6 months later, we were moved into the basement of the building. This began a trend that continued to the end of my stay at Sunset Blvd. Photo is on the top right.

Videotape Librarian!
I moved over to the Engineering side of the lot. I had a window again, I was so happy! I even had a fern hanging in front of it. Within a year or so, they moved Master Control into that space and bricked in the window and it was never to be seen again. Sigh.
The photo on the second row far left, shows what occupied the room on move day. The remote truck storage room.

Broadcast Operations!
I was in the common area of a second floor suite that had many offices with windows. I did not have one of them. The photo is the second row on the far right. My desk was right by the entry door and everyone coming into the suite, thought I was the secretary.

A few years later, we had a reorganization and we moved to what we called, The Sunset Building. I had a window again and I had a spider plant behind me. I was so happy! Well, minus the summer arrival of termites that we found out infested this building. I could write a book just about this location. They did finally fumigate the place after we left. The photo is the third row on the far left.

They decided to return us to the main Administration building again. I ended up on the other end of the second floor and this time I had an office with a window. I was so happy! This room was directly below the President of KCET's office and the view is (IMHO) the best one on the lot. It was the view that you see in the open of the 1956 movie, Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I loved this office! (always a bad sign).

The company decides to remodel and upgrade the main Administration Building and we get sent to the basement for upwards of 4 months. No window again. The photo is on the far left, bottom row.

Reorganized again! We get a new boss, move over to the Engineering side of the street and get digs on the second floor of the ETC. We have 4 offices and mine was the only one without a window...big sigh once again.
This office is where I spent the last 4 years in Broadcast Operations. Thankfully for me, my boss kept her window shades open, so I could see outside. I truly appreciate her helping me keep my sanity.
The photo shows me sitting in a chair, in my last office at KCET. Bottom right.

Well, onward to an office space that is nothing BUT windows.

Wish me luck, I start working there on Monday.

    An Old Fashioned Puppet Show

I don't know if there's more on it anywhere else on the web, I haven't checked. I only just came across the item and thought I'd point you to it.

    1. Dim Skip, my friend. I believe that is a traveling show and a neighbor of mine operates (voices) one of the muppets. Very cool!

  3. Oh boy, you really did move around a lot. You don't think that the latest was because they had no where else to move you? (something to think about). Good luck on Monday :-)

    1. Hey Fran, I am so sorry I will no longer be documenting the Los Feliz/Hollywood/Silverlake area. A true loss.

    2. So long Uncle Jer and that awesome Mexican restaurant. So long to the metro that took me to your office when I came to visit. Guess I'll need to explore your new neighborhood next time I come.
