My workplace borders many areas of Los Angeles. As I mentioned yesterday, Los Feliz is right down the street. Going in another direction up Sunset Blvd, you have Silverlake. Whenever I look out the windows in our offices, that is the view I see most often. Everytime I see those hills, I think of a show we ran back in the day, in a series called P.O.V. The show is "Silverlake Life: The View From Here". The title and the view I see are closely bound together, at least in my mind.
It makes me think of how many people have died of AIDS, not just here, but around the world...in the time frame of the almost 3 decades I have worked here.
A sobering thought.
Oh my... I am flooded with memories.
ReplyDeleteI miss my old 'hood, truly I do.
And I have a very sharp recollection of watching Silverlake Life so many years ago.
Thank you for posting this - we all must remember.
I have been blessed in so many ways and one of them is that over these past 30 years, I have truly grown to love Los Angeles. Especially this east side of Hollywood neighborhood, that is my second home.
ReplyDeleteThis is why I do what I do -- I've seen too many people die, too many friends bury their partners, too many people spend years sick and unable to live fully. I'm glad that, at least for people in high-income countries and who have health insurance, HIV has largely become a treatable chronic disease, but we can't forget that in most places, that's not how it works.
ReplyDeleteGetting this reminder in the context of a picture of such a lovely place is A Good Thing. Thanks for this post, Angel.
Piglet: I knew you would care.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all you do, on the research side of the street.
