Only in LA do you end up with a 3 ring circus when you shut down a piece of a freeway. That is what is happening just 3 hours before this post goes up. At Midnight on Friday (Saturday Morning) the 405 Freeway will be closed to traffic, while they take down half of a bridge. Lucky for us, we not only have to live through this weekend, but we get to do it all over again, next year, when the other half of the bridge goes down. Sigh...
I read the other day that Jet Blue is flying people from Burbank airport to Long Beach airport for a total of $4. What a deal!
After those flights sold out in record time, a group of bicyclists decided to capitalize on the publicity and are going to race the plane to Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. We will see who wins later on today. :-)
I personally think it's not going to amount to much of anything. Except ratings for the TV stations in LA. Just in case, I have absolutely no plans to leave Santa Clarita. Any work I have, can wait til Monday. :-)
I always disliked the 405 and avoided it; it was always problematic in my experience... and that was without shutdowns!
ReplyDeleteNow there were times I could not fully avoid it, but I found many alternate routes. When I lived in Los Feliz, I would either take the 5 to the 10 to the 105 to the airport, far superior or I would take the surface roads.
When I first moved to LA, my office was on Western in Koreatown, about a block from the Wiltern Theatre, so my commute was very easy. Then we moved the office to Olympic, directly next to the 405. I always took the surface roads then... I was a big surface road user.
Have fun kids!
Fran, I really like your solution, it was perfect, you took a complete mess and made it work for you. :-)
ReplyDeleteMe too. It takes a lot to make me deal with the 405. Going to the Getty Center (which is when I took this photo) was one of them. Picking up people at the airport (back in the day) was another one. We have a tendency to take the LAX or Van Nuys Flyaway, to get to the airport ourselves. My son is quite good at dropping us off in Van Nuys and then we take the LAX to Union Station one and pick up my car at KCET. Saves so much money on parking fees (and of course security is first rate). I truly don't understand how quality of life is so good over on the Westside, personally. Traffic jams and such, all the time...but they have made their bed and they are certainly capable of lying in it.
