My guy tells the story of his father coming all the way out to Los Angeles, back in the day. He was young and was visiting one of his father's brothers. The man had a bar somewhere in the Downtown LA area. His name, was Edward. Well, my husband has put both those things together, in his mind at least, and has come up with the King Eddy Saloon.
Being he "Liked" the bar, on Facebook and being we were walking around the general area, I asked him if he wanted to try to approach the place (carefully) and see it for ourselves.
Our problems were twofold.
1. It is right on the edge of Skid Row in Downtown LA.
2. It was 3PM and the bar doesn't open until 5PM.
We decided to approach it via the Ronald Reagan Office building, figuring that sounded safe. As a matter of fact, very safe. There was a Disney shoot going on and so there were cops all around the area. Win!
The neighborhood did indeed get a bit grittier, but from what I read about the history of the place, they have trained the "residents" of Skid Row to stay away from the immediate area of the bar. So as you can see in the photo, my Husband now has a photo taken out front of The Kind Eddy Saloon.
My personal thoughts are that being the man was Jewish, the bar was probably around the area, just to the East of Downtown. Now called Caesar Chavez Ave, but back then known as Brooklyn Ave. Where it intersected Soto Street, was a big Jewish neighborhood in the early 1900's. Now days, it is mostly inhabited by people of Hispanic background. If it had ever been there, it is very gone, now days.
Glad we made it in and out safely.
