Turkish Eggs

My Husband and I saw in Milk Street Magazine, a recipe for Turkish Eggs.

We both commented that we would like to try this and so I bought Greek Yogurt to do so.

We finally took the time to make it on Sunday and I was not impressed with it.

I took some of the left-overs and added the sausage and some cheese, for the reheat.

It still was not wonderful. Edible, but definitely not something I will make again.

Too bad, because fluffy eggs sounded really good.

Detroit From Windsor, Ontario

My Water Post For Today.

A Throwback to 2006 and Windsor, Canada.

I was there for a Steely Dan concert, and spent my final morning in Canada.

I had no idea that my Son would eventually relocate to that very part of the Country.

Enjoy the fountain...and the Detroit river.

Graupel And Hail

It has been quite a weekend here at the angel house.

Friday brought heavy rain all day and high wind toward evening.

Overnight was more of the same and by 8AM or so we had graupel falling.

It was nice to sit on my couch and drink my coffee while watching the large flakes fall.

Then after about 20 minutes, it stopped and turned to rain.

At about 12:30PM it went from rain to hail, and 1 clap of thunder was heard by me.

That lasted for just a little bit, and then back to rain.

What a day!

We get a break from the rain today, and hopefully the last race in Fontana can be run.

Southwest Chief Gets Its Share Of Trouble

Fort Madison, Iowa on Friday 2/24/23.

What has been going on with The Southwest Chief, is that back on Wednesday night, the wind coming through my area of LA over to the desert and into Arizona, became fierce.

The trains couldn't see, and the high winds pummeling them made them unable to travel further, and so they stopped.

Caught in that mess, the Southwest Chief.

When it finally got out of it all, it had to deal with situations like, picking up crew from other trains, and then having their own crew time out. The hours kept adding up.

Amtrak decided to cancel #3 that was coming West, and terminate it in Albuquerque. It then connected with the poor #4, and the entire 12 car (with 1 baggage car), and 5 engine train came East.

That is what you are seeing in this photo, taken a little after 8 AM.

I have no idea when things are going to get back to normal, as these mega-storms head East.

A Bigger Storm Is Coming

Bits of drizzle on and off today, so we are fine here at the angel house.

The worst part is supposed to be Friday and Saturday, and so we went to do our normal weekly food shopping a day early.

We have nothing planned for the next 24 hours, and so we will watch this storm come in, and bring rain and (potentially) snow.

I think that, so far, we have had snow as falling at around 3 thousand feet (we are 1,500 feet).

The best part of the day, a rainbow appeared at around 5PM.

Always beautiful.

The Calm Before The Storm

We have a cold storm coming to our area on Thursday.

Today is the final day of clear weather for the next few days, and in honor of that fact I stopped at the park across the street from our Senior Center.

If I had thought of this earlier, I could have done it before we picked up lunch, oh well.

The clouds were just wonderful, and Canyon Country sitting in the valley by the river, looks so beautiful.

Enjoy, and hope my next post isn't snow. :-)

Empire Builder Trains Combined

Due to a forecast with a heavy snow storm, and potential avalanches along the route, Burlington Northern Santa Fe closed the Northern Transcon.

This meant that the Empire Builder trains that were traveling both east and west were combined in Glasgow, Montana into one large train and sent east to Chicago.

It ended up being a train with 6 engines (BNSF requires at least 2 engines when going through snow country) a baggage car, 16 passenger (and dining) cars and then another baggage car trailing.

The photo screenshot was taken at a camera along the Northern Transcon route, at Verndale, Minnesota. New engine 304 leading the pack.

A pretty impressive sight to see.

I was glad to hear that passenger safety was taken into account, and they turned the westbound train around.

Chicago is a better place to deal with getting back to where you need to be, rather than in avalanche country in Montana.

Dining Back In The Old Days

While I was waiting at the Amtrak Metropolitan Lounge, I checked out the current display they had in the cases.

This one in particular, caught my eye.

A tea or coffee pot and a cup to drink out of. Both made of china.

Something you no longer see on your long-distance train trip.

Now days we get plastic dishes, styrofoam cups, and paper napkins.

It is just not the same as the "Old" days.

A Waterscape At Chandler Fashion Center

First off, Happy Birthday in Heaven to Walter Becker, half of Steely Dan. He would have been 73 today.

My Water Post For Today.

Minus the many, many tanks of fish we saw at the Odysea Aquarium, we did not see much in the way of water in Phoenix, Arizona.

This waterscape was in front of the BJ's Brewhouse at the Chandler Fashion Center.

It was one of the fountains that change what pattern of water is thrown into the air.

Interesting to watch while sitting outside, but not much if you are just passing through.

Sunset Santa Clarita

We were watching the end of the Xfinity race at Daytona yesterday and trying to cook a pizza at the same time.

It moved everything to later in the evening and so when I went out, the sun was setting.

Truly so beautiful.

I managed to get it both from the front and the backyard.

Sometimes things go your way.

Two Former Broadcasters

One of the things that bind the friendship between our friends in Phoenix and us, is the fact that my major in school and his, were similar.

With his Masters he ended up teaching broadcasting for decades, whereas I ended up in Traffic at a PTV station.

Lots of similar things happened to both of us, decades apart.

Schooling is like that. You learn a bit of many parts of production and then end up constrained by union regulations and things like that. In other words, doing a small part of what you learned.

It is always interesting to see him, and share that bit of combined knowledge.

I have a similar situation with his son, who is a Theater Major, and who currently works for the Phoenix Symphony. Unfortunately, no shows going on the weekend we were there.

In my own family, I went to school with my Brother-in-law, back in my early college days on Long Island. We worked many shows together at that time.

How did I end up with so many people involved in this career of mine?

No idea.

The Geography Of West Tucson

I wish I had gotten a better photo of the diagram showing off what you can see off in the distance, from this outlook at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum.

The part that they mentioned as the easiest to see, is the recharging basin of the Central Arizona Project.

I have only seen canals up north, so it surprised me that there was some down south in Tucson.

As they said, looking at my photo, it is easy to see the spreading ponds off in the distance.

Earthquake faults are also in that area, which also surprised me.

Definitely an interesting place to see.

A Rainbow At Fort Madison

It's Puzzle Time Again!

On Wednesday there was a pretty substansial rainstorm at Fort Madison, Iowa.

After the storm, a beautiful rainbow.

One of the fans made a jigidi puzzle out of the image and you can solve the puzzle at this link.

Rainbow puzzle

It took me 17:59 to get it finished. I know some of you want to know. :-)

Enjoy.

Friends For Life

My Husband had a full life, before I came on the scene.

I was all of 12 years old, the year these two men met at Fort Dix, New Jersey.

We won't even discuss how old I was when Kennedy was shot. :-)

They both made it through their tour of duty during the Vietnam War, though they did not even manage to be in the same country. My Husband was sent to Korea and his friend, to Nam.

In spite of that, they kept up their friendship and when I did finally grow up and move to Los Angeles, they were the people who gave me permission to marry him.

This Pandemic has been hard on friendships, so we are incredibly happy that we have managed to see them, not once, but twice in the past 6 months.

Maybe a trip to Knott's is going to happen this year, since they bought a yearly pass in October.

Grand Panda Is Back!

First off, Happy Valentine's Day!

Our local chinese restaurant over the past 20 or so years, closed for a remodel that took close to a year to accomplish.

Their Valentine gift to Saugus, is that they finally reopened after all this time.

I went over on Sunday, and picked up some War Wonton soup, appetizers, and fried rice.

It was a good Superbowl dinner that we enjoyed.

Glad to have them back.

The remodel basically removed the wall on one side of the entry, so that the area is more open. I am not sure if the people who are eating in that area prefer it, but the people waiting, certainly do.

Hanging At The Marketplace

My Water Post For Today.

Another view of the waterscape at the Bridgeport Marketplace.

The water is front and center, in this photo. No birds or turtles around.

A very calm photo and one to love.

I hope you enjoy.

Catisfactions

Back in December, my friend in Belgium sent me presents.

One of them was for my cat, Makenna.

Being it was in a foreign language, it took us a bit to figure it out.

The are cute little treats for cats that have catnip flavor in each one.

We only give her 1 or 2 a day, but when she wants one, she has been trained to come to the ottoman and basically beg for it.

Thus, this is what we see several times a day.

I wanted to train her to sit back on the ottoman, but didn't think she would be quite so diligent about it.

I guess we won this battle, though when we run out, she is not getting any others.

They are basically European, not American.

Glass In Flight Exhibit

While we were visiting the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum a few weeks ago, we came upon some beautiful glass butterflies. I had no idea idea what they were or who made them. I also didn't know if they were permanent, or a temporary exhibit. Thankfully, Google has the answer.

"Glass in Flight is a traveling art and science sculpture exhibit featuring over 21 steel and Dalle de Verre glass sculptures of gigantic, realistic insects. Created by Alex Heveri, each sculpture captures the essence of flight. Sunlight through the colored glass mimics the transparency and iridescence of insect wings, intensifying the illusion of movement and life. All dragonflies and some butterflies are mounted on 12-foot-tall poles, making these towering, glittering sculptures informative, engaging and simply enchanting.

Alex Heveri is a Tucson-based artist, attorney and sculptor who has been creating enormous steel and glass structures for more than 25 years. Glass in Flight represents more than three years of solo work. Her massive Dalle de Verre glass and steel sculptures of life like bees, butterflies, beetles and dragonflies weigh more than 10,000 lbs."

I am so glad we got to see some of her work.

Cholla

While at the Desert Museum, I managed to find a Cholla bush.

They are generally called jumping cholla, because they will use their spines to catch on whatever is passing by them.

Then they break off and go wherever the host brings them and when they fall off, they root and make a new plant.

What I love the most is that the sun catches the spines and highlights them, so you see white instead of green.

I find it very lovely.

Saguaro At The Desert Museum

I must admit that I rarely see such an unusual amount of arms on a saguaro cactus.

When I looked close at it, it seems to be missing the top of the "head" of the saguaro.

Maybe over the years it then decided to add some arms in weird positions.

I thought it was interesting enough to document.

I love these cacti.

Lemons (2023)

Last year we had over 30 lemons, if I remember correctly.

I was sure it was because I am home every day, especially during the Pandemic years.

To my surprise, I got about 25 lemons this year. They usually say a tree takes a year off, after a bumper crop.

I guess not this year.

Because it was going to be cold while we traveled to Tucson, we decided to pick the remainder of lemons on the tree.

Here are some of them. All in all, a pretty good crop.

Beef Roll-Ups

Vons had a piece of flat round steak for sale. So for $3 in change it made a meal for me and my husband.

I made Beef Roll-Ups.

The recipe was from the Food Network, but I basically cut up some onion and combined it with seasoned bread crumbs.

Rolled them up and used toothpicks to keep them together, and then coated them with flour to fry them in olive oil.

Added cream of mushroom soup and let it cook for at least an hour.

I made homemade potatoes to finish it off.

Some fresh fruit, and we had a meal.

The Inside Passage Of Alaska

My Water Post For Today.

Ketchikan is the first city on the Inside Passage of Alaska.

Some of the most stunning water, on the entire trip.

After viewing it and traveling through it, I can understand why so many people live so far from the remainder of Alaska.

Sometime I hope to return.

A Cool Photo From The Past

Look what my Sister and Brother-In-Law sent me...

A photo from June of 1993, taken at KCET.

I would have to check out my photo album for that year to figure out why we were there that day, but I suspect that it was some event, maybe kids day.

As my Sister said "you look so young".

I commented that my Husband did too. Look at all that dark hair!

Thanks so much for the memories from almost 30 years ago.

Jellyfish

While we were looking at the many kinds of fish at the Odysea Aquarium, we happened upon a tank of Jelly Fish.

The story in my family goes that my Dad, when he was stationed at Pensacola, Florida during WWII, went swimming one day. He ended up getting stung by the native jellyfish (which might be these moon jellies).

He was young, he was stupid, as the young sometimes are, but he survived his jellyfish attack.

I got a kick out of seeing these fish. They are pretty incredible.

Yes, my Husband and his friend were taking cell phone pictures, at the time I took this photo.

Tucson Mountain Park

I mentioned it in THIS post.

We passed this area on the way to the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum.

We had no idea what the place was, and let me tell you, it is stunning.

I have never seen so many cacti on mountains in my life.

If you are lucky, they are normally all spread out, so this was truly a treat.

If you are ever in Tucson, I totally recommend trying to find it.

An Angel Arrived This Christmas

My friend from Belgium sent me a cherished angel this Christmas.

It had an accident, at one point and her father tried to glue the little tip back on the angel's wing.

He failed, due to advancing age and so my friend fixed it.

Yes, if you look close, you can see it, but it does not detract from its beauty.

Thank you so much, my friend, for the beautiful gift and I am glad that I own golden candles, to use for her.

Southern Pacific Railroad Engine 1673

One of the things of interest at Tucson, Arizona train station is Southern Pacific Railroad Engine 1673.

After being built in NY, it traveled to Arizona and called Tucson home for its working life.

It spent the better part of the 20th Century working and then was retired to its home base and eventually settled in a covered area built by the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum.

I am sure I would have learned more about it, had the museum been open. Unfortunately, we were dropped off too late for that.

It was good to see it, finally, and by the way, it is also home to the cats who live at the station.

I got a few photos of the cats, the morning we arrived. There were none to be found in the evening of our departure.
