Navy Pier Redux

The other day my computer started up with a fantastic photograph of Navy Pier, in Chicago.

Almost 15 years to the day after my Husband and I were there to take the Architecture Tour of downtown Chicago.

I went looking in my photos for photos of Navy Pier, and I found this one. It is from the front, not the back like the computer photo is, but it was worth posting them side-by-side.

If you are ever in Chicago, and have the time, I totally recommend the architecture tour through the Chicago River.

I believe it takes an hour, and you get to see the buildings that were the model for other cities in America.

Oh, and Navy Pier is pretty cool, too.

A Viking River Cruise

Hi Jet Setters...not.

Jeb Brooks and his wife, Suzanne recently went on a Viking River Cruise from New Orleans, Louisiana to Memphis, Tennessee.

I have seen booklets come to my home, that feature these cruises, and the price of one of them is astronomical.

So I ended up booking us a river cruise around Fort Madison last year for 25 dollars. (Yes, I am cheap).

That doesn't take away from the fact that I think this would be quite the journey to take.

So Jeb and Suzanne took this 7 day journey for me. You can watch the video HERE.

Right off the bat the price for their cruise, was 13 thousand dollars. Yikes!

They inform you that being it is an American ship, an American crew, and American everything, that costs more than European tours. Welcome to America. :-)

The way the tour goes, it has busses that follow the ship to every stop along the way, so you always have transportation when you get off the riverboat.

That makes a big difference, I am sure.

It is worth the 23 minutes to watch the video.

Thanks Jeb and Suzanne.

The Acela At Moynihan Station

As we entered the Moynihan Metropolitan Lounge, we immediately saw this cool Acela train on the left side.

I couldn't resist getting a few photos of it, as we left the area.

We rode the real Acela back in 2008, to Washington, DC and are somehow sad that they will be replacing these engines and train cars, in the "near" future.

It was an interesting experience for the three of us.

BTW, someone left their cell phone on top of the case that surrounded the Acela. They came back frantic, a few minutes after this photo was taken.

Baby Lock Surger

I own a Baby Lock surger.

My friend from Phoenix gave it to me back in the 90's, and it has sat in the top of my closet for decades.

I have never taken it out of its carrying case.

On Tuesday, I finally did.

OMG! 4 different spools of thread to deal with, and I know she mentioned that it had problems with getting the tension right on the different spools.

Nope, after watching a video, I am going to try to get rid of it.

This is not for me.

Lowe's Acknowledges Memorial Day (2025)

At 6:45AM, my carbon monoxide detector reached the end of its days, and started beeping.

I had just had breakfast, and went back to try to sleep a bit more (I woke up at 3AM), before my Husband got up.

I got up and immediately found out that it had reached the end of its life, so I placed it in our son's old room, and shut the door.

I got an hour and a half extra sleep, though I might have had a bit more if a black crow did not hit my window at 8:15AM. Sigh...

The bottom line of this entire situation is that we had to make a trip to Lowe's, to get a replacement detector.

We park in the Veteran's spaces, right by the front door, and what did we see? This lovely display that they made to honor those who did not come back from war.

There was a bench, if someone wanted to sit and contemplate.

Yes, the white car is ours, btw.

Memorial Day (2025)

My Water Post For Today.

When we were staying in Garden City last month, we drove through Eisenhower Park several times.

I did not stop at this Veteran's Memorial, since we have several photos that we took in 2017. I posted the following words, back then.

The Monument acknowledges all wars that American Men from the Long Island area were involved in.

It goes all the way back to the Civil War!

It is a old style monument, with each conflict on a side of the Octogon.

The water is soothing, as one would expect it to be.

I hope you enjoy.

It's Back! Let The Sewing Begin Again

As I mentioned the other day, my sewing machine broke a few months ago.

When I did my original search, all I found was a large repair store south of downtown Los Angeles.

Thus, I dragged my feet, in regard to getting it looked at.

On a second search, I found a sewing machine repair store in Santa Clarita. In Saugus, no less.

On Thursday afternoon I called them, and the man said to bring it in, which I did on Friday morning.

He called me back at around 3PM, but on a holiday weekend, I was not going to drive in semi-rush hour traffic, so we picked it up on Saturday morning.

He showed me the broken part, which was the bobbin holder. I was pretty sure was the problem and was glad I was right. It was something I could not have fixed easily.

He also cleaned it all, so now it smells like machine oil. It cost me money to fix it, but I am happy to have my machine back and in good condition.

Billy Joel Canceled All His Tour Dates

Billy Joel has canceled all his tour dates.

He canceled several shows that he was supposed to do right now, but was to resume the tour in July. The problem is he has been diagnosed with a rare disorder called Normal pressure hydrocephalus.

He is under a doctors care and already had some surgery, but the doctor says that touring makes the disorder worse.

Knowing Billy, I am sure he wanted to return to touring, but the doctor knows what's best for him.

He wants to be around for his two younger children, Della (9) and Remy (7) so I totally think this is the right move for him.

Good luck my former Hicksville neighbor.

Sewing Machine Woes

Over the years, you have seen me sew many things, dresses, jeans (mostly shortening them), and several quilts for my Son.

I was shortening some jeans for my Husband recently, and on the last leg, it died.

It will no longer catch the bobbin thread, when I try to get it ready to sew.

I finally found a sewing repair place, right in town, so I had to get it out of the cabinet it has lived in for the past 35 or so years.

As an aside, I used that sewing cabinet for a changing table, when my Son was young.

Off it will go today, we will see if it can be fixed.

Earl Grey Cake (No Recipe)

While we were at my Son's house for Easter, his housemate made a cake for dessert, to bring to the place where she was going to celebrate the holiday.

While she and my Son made it, they made 2 cakes, one for us, too.

I had never had Earl Grey Cake before, but I will say it was quite tasty.

The problem, of course, is that I had trouble sleeping that night.

Taro wanting to sleep on my lap, did not help the situation, of course.

I do not have the recipe, but it contains steeped earl grey tea, that mixes into the batter.

Whipped cream was the topping, and then pistachios on top of that.

Thanks for the excellent dessert. Sorry I did not get a photo of it being cut or anything. This is it sitting in the fridge.

Summer Highland Falls (Actually Spring)

“They say that these are not the best of times, there the only times I’ve ever known.”

I have been re-reading a Billy Joel biography, and hearing about where some of his songs came from, and it made me check out his first 3 albums (prior to The Stranger). They have always been my favorite albums, for the raw Billy Joel vibe they have. Most of the songs no longer get played, though this one does. Summer Highland Falls. Highland Falls is located in Upstate NY, just below West Point (in case you care). As a matter of fact, we passed it twice on our recent journey along the Hudson. Too bad I did not know where it was.

The first line of the song brings back memories of those early 70’s days. I was a few years behind him in age (6 to be exact), but I know much of what he was talking about. The Vietnam War was going on, and we children felt like we were being raised to go off and be fodder for a war that made no sense. At least the men did. As it ended up, my grade had to sign up, but amazingly, the war was ended in 1973, so most of them did not go. Unfortunately for my Husband, that was not the case 12 years earlier. After college, he had to sign-up and eventually serve, in 1967. If he had not signed, he would have been drafted (he did get a notice about 2 months after he chose to serve). What that means is he got to choose what branch he wanted, and what he wanted to do in the service. Many others did not, and became, as they say, cannon fodder.

The last generations have had a volunteer service, and so they do not have that over their heads. It makes a big difference, though we did not have school shootings happening, in our day, so I give them that.

As to day to day living, it has never been easy. When I moved out west, my salary had a total of $10 extra each month, which I could use to buy things like a tool from Sears. I still have my needle nose plyers from those days. My rent was half my monthly salary, my food was $10 a week and if I totaled it up and it was too much, I started putting food back onto the shelves. I owned a car that I bought from the friend who I drove across the country with, but many times I did not have money for gas, so I took 2 or 3 busses to work. My boyfriend watched me survive for almost a year, before he proposed to me. A smart man. I am very good at finances, so I did make through that important first year. I did not have health care, but when I got my PBS job, a month after we married, I had healthcare, moving forward. Children who reached 18 no longer had insurance on their parent’s policies, in my day. Thank goodness I was basically healthy that first year.

As to housing, we married and moved into a mobile home, for the first 5 years. No one told us that the rent went up each September, so two months after we moved in, we had our first rent raise for the park space. Thankfully, we got out after 5 years, and bought our house. It is not the best, but it has served us well, these past 40 years.

These were my mid 20's to mid 30's.

My Son was born, in 1990, and we survived raising him successfully.

It could have been worse.

Sesame Street Returns To PBS

New episodes of Sesame Street will return to PBS next year.

Netflix will give Sesame Workshop money to make new episodes, after Warner Brothers/Discovery ended their support of the show.

Netflix says they are giving a bit less than Warner Brothers did, but being Sesame Workshop cut their staff a few weeks ago, I am sure they will be able to adjust.

A show that has aired for over 50 years, has the right to continue to educate our children, moving forward.

I can't believe I am saying this, but thanks Netflix.

The Christmas Tree

My Water Post For Today.

Yes, I admit I lied last week. :-)

I did take a photo while on the bridge coming into Fort Madison.

That's the Christmas Tree that we see, lit up for the holidays.

For the rest of the year, it is just a tree.

I love it anyway, especially since it sits in the middle of the Mississippi River.

Rain? Always A Surprise

It's raining!

We are in Mid-May and as a general rule, that is the end of the rainy season for us.

Along came something, and here we are, with rain yesterday.

I am always glad to have real rain, so that all of my grass gets watered. My sprinklers are never quite good enough to get to every corner of the lawn.

I hope it does not add to the mid-wests problems with tornados, and heavy rain.

Yes, We Have No Bananas...

We went shopping at the grocery store on Friday.

It looks like the start of scarcity due to tariffs, is beginning.

8 Bananas were available, and I took 2 of them.

Sorry shoppers, I took 1/4th of the product.

I did ask the employee if it was tariffs that were making the bananas scarce, and he said they were having problems procuring several products, the bananas being the worst.

I feel for all those people who make smoothies every morning.

At least it is not me.

Pizza Rustica Sold In A Store?

I went to our Italian Deli yesterday.

I came for cannoli's, since I did not get anything special for Mother's Day on Sunday.

As I waited for them to be made, I took a look in the refrigerated section, and what do I see?

Pizza Rustica!

I was shocked, that this Easter treat would be available just a few miles from my home.

So I inquired about it to the person waiting on me.

She said they make it for Easter only (what a surprise).

I guess they had one left.

Good to know, moving forward in life.

A photo of my cannoli, if you care. :-)

Surfer Dude

He's getting up there in age, my surfer dude towel.

My Husband has gone through 2 towels, in the time I have had him.

Of course, back 5 years ago, he went when I worked, so he had reason to run through towels.

When I hang my towel up, I like to show him off, if I can.

He is just so emblematic of the California lifestyle.

I will miss him when he is finally retired.

Egg Foo Young (Better Than Takeout)

Mandy Foo wrote a book called, Better Than Takeout. It sits on my Son's dining room table, so he has easy access to the recipes. I was thumbing through it, while I visited him, and found this Egg Foo Young recipe. It looked easier than the one I originally did, and I decided to give it a try.

Better Than Takeout Egg Foo Young

Ingredients

FOR THE EGG MIXTURE:

5 eggs
4 ounces [113 grams] of pre-cooked ground pork
4 ounces [113 grams] of peeled shrimp
1/2 cup of carrot
1/3 cup of Chinese leeks
1/3 cup of Chinese chives or Green Onions
1/3 cup of cabbage
1/4 cup of freshly chopped hot chili (if you want it spicy)
1 tbsp of soy sauce
2 tsp of oyster sauce
1/2 tsp of black pepper
Salt to taste [I use about 1/4 tsp]

FOR THE SAUCE:

1 tbsp of oyster sauce
1 tbsp of soy sauce
1 tsp of sugar
1 tbsp of corn starch
1/2 tsp of pepper
1 cup of water or chicken broth

Directions
1. Cut cabbage, carrot into thin shreds. Cut Chinese leeks and Chinese chives into short strips. Chop some fresh hot chilies
2. Roughly cut the shrimp into small pieces. Pre-cook the ground pork. Beat 5 eggs.
3. Mix everything in a big bowl, and add all the seasoning, which are 1 tbsp of soy sauce, 2 tsp of oyster sauce, 1/2 tsp of black pepper, salt to taste. I use about 1/4 salt.
4. Turn the heat to high and heat up your wok for about 10 seconds. Add 1 tbsp of vegetable oil. Then turn the heat to low because the egg is very easy to burn.
5. Take about 1/2 cup of the egg mixture. Carefully put that in. Fry this on low heat for 1-2 minutes each side or until both sides are golden brown.
6. Because my wok is round bottom so I can only do one at a time. If you are using a big frying pan, you might be able to fry many at the same time.
7. Next, we are making the gravy. In a small sauce pot, add about 1 tbsp of oyster sauce, 2 tbsp of soy sauce, 1 tsp of sugar, 1 tbsp of corn starch, 1/2 tsp of white pepper and 1 cup of water. You can use chicken broth if you have it.
8. Give that a mix and we will put this on the stove. Cook it on medium heat.
9. If you see it start bubbling, turn the heat to low. Keep stirring it.
10. Once you see the sauce becoming thick. Turn off the heat and pour the sauce on the egg foo young.

Angel Here: When we make this again, our thoughts are to pre-cook the vegetables and meat a bit, before adding them to the egg mixture. She mentions that the eggs should not be too overdone, and that is what happened to us.

Another thing we might try, is add a small amount of cooked rice to the mixture, to firm it up.

Jeb And Suzanne Brooks Ride Across America

My Son sent us a YouTube video with the comment: Was this your trip?

As it ended up, Jeb and Suzanne Brooks left Moynihan Train Hall, the day before we did. April 16, 2025.

You can view their trip HERE.

This video really highlights some of the things we saw, on this journey.

Obviously, we lost them, when we took our detour to Michigan, but that first leg of the journey we were just a day behind them.

I got a real kick out of him mentioning the Dum Dums and the fact that 12 million of them are produced a day. He did the same research I did.

They got a special deal, where it was buy 1 get 1 free in the Roomette and from what I can see on the video, they booked it all in one shot.

I had no choice, I had to book multiple segments for our trip, and that is why it ended up so expensive. No regrets though.

Minus the commercial for Amtrak Vacations, which I do recommend that you do your homework about, it was a very well produced video.

The Hudson River In Spring

My Water Post For Today.

I have never seen the Hudson River, as much as I did this trip.

Crossing The Tappen Zee Bridge, is about the most I have done, over the years.

The train is right by the water, and we were on the side with the river.

It was lovely, and we saw more water than expected, due to the fact that the trees were mostly still bare.

Minus the two cuties that were blooming in the center of this photo.

I hope you enjoy.

Mother's Day (2025)

While we were on Long Island, I immediately took a detour, to the cemetery where my parents are buried.

I did not even have the location, but my Husband and I have spent several afternoons visiting, so we found it with no problem.

It was Easter Week, so I knew that one of the decorations would be on it. I pay for 4 holidays a year. Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day, and Father's Day.

What I did not expect, was the fact that it seemed that someone had just been buried, right in their area.

There were dead carnations on the dirt, that gave away that fact.

So sad to see the difference, between what you expect their grave to look like, and what it actually was.

Happy Mother's Day Mom. I still miss you and love you.

Red Lobster - It's Just Not As Good

While we were on Long Island, last month, we decided to visit our old "hometown" Red Lobster.

It has been several years since we have eaten there, and we know they are having financial problems, though they are supposedly, doing better now.

I had a personal favorate, Shrimp Alfredo. Unfortunately, the alfredo sauce was not up to par, (the pasta was swimming in it) and neither were the shrimp. Note: In the photo, I have eaten some, so you do not get the full effect.

I ended up leaving some of it, so that gives you a hint as to my feelings on it.

My Husband said his dinner was fine, so I guess that is in their favor. It is kind of hard to screw up a baked potato, with your shrimp.

We decided to skip dessert totally, which says something, too.

I hate when good restaruants sell out to companies that are there to strip them of all value.

Crumbling Central Warehouse In Albany

When we traveled on the Lake Shore Limited, last month, we reached Schenectady, and something came to mind.

I remembered several years ago, a building located by the tracks in Albany, was so bad that pieces of it started falling right by the tracks.

If it was just freight, I am sure they would have been worried, but not as much as the concern for the Amtrak trains, loaded with hundreds of passengers, that pass by daily.

The situation forced the cancelation of trains for several days, until they could shore up the crumbling facade.

As I kept an eye out for this building, it was so easy to see it.

It is a mess, and they did hang netting along the two walls that face the tracks.

I was surprised that the building still existed, at all.

Note: the bridge on the far right, is where the train crosses The Hudson River.

The Glorieta Pass In New Mexico

After you leave Albuquerque, New Mexico, you head north to the Santa Fe area.

Just before you get to Santa Fe, you are sent to the east, to a town called Lamay, which is where passengers detrain, take the bus to get the last few miles to Santa Fe.

Our train continues to head east, and enters the Glorieta Pass.

It is the most wooded area of the state of New Mexico. Lots of trees and mountains. It reminds me of the Donner Pass in California, in that regard.

It also has many streams, and is truly Gods Country.

Wednesday, May 7, 2025

Dum Dums

Our Amtrak train passed a town called Bryan, Ohio.

We didn't think anything of it, until we saw a water tower, along the tracks.

It had Dum Dums painted all over it.

I read up on the Spangler Candy Company website. I found out that they proudly produce 12 million Dum-Dums each day, in Bryan, Ohio.

They also make other products at their factory, and have a virtual tour at Spangler Candy World, nearby.

I wish I had known. Maybe we would have spent the day in this small Ohio town.

Attacks From Afar

I have been getting messages from my Train Travel Help Website.

As the administrator of the site, when someone (or something) attacks the website, trying to log in, I am notified.

The past 2 weeks or so, I am constantly getting messages.

It is usually being attacked overnight, so my thought is Russia or China are doing the attacking.

The only thing I can think of, is that I posted the website as a way for my Facebook friends to read about our recent trip.

To combat this, I have limited the number of times the website will allow a wrong log-in.

I have also increased the amount of time they get locked out.

I am hopeful this will help.

Mississippi River - It Keeps Rolling On

My Water Post For Today.

I did not take a million photos of the Mississippi River, this time around.

I did take this one, just downriver from the bridge at Fort Madison.

It is always a pleasure to cross the biggest river in the United States, no matter where I do it.

I hope you enjoy.

Roses (The 2025 Edition)

May the 4th Be with you, this Star Wars Day. :-)

=================================================

This past week, my roses have come into their own.

I am sure the gardener fertilized them, but it is still quite a sight to see.

The three highlighted are: Chicago Peace, Ketchup and Mustard, and Mr. Lincoln.

Mister Lincoln was the one that kept calling me, as I got into my car in the morning.

I love roses.

Since When Did Executive Orders Mean Loss Of Funding

The day has finally happened.

By Executive Order, President Donald Trump has removed all funding from PBS (and NPR).

This has been threatened multiple times, over the decades, but we have beat it back each time, by calling our representatives in Congress.

This time, the President just flat out ordered it to be done. No Congress involved at all.

We will see where this goes, via a lawsuit, but I know for a fact that my friends who still work at PBS are not happy today.

Elkhart, Indiana And Virtual RailFan

It is not often that I find a Virtual Railfan Location that I have seen on their Grab Bag, but never on YouTube.

It happened on our recent trip through Elkhart, Indiana.

I have been there before, but that was years ago. So I just noted the Amish boarding the train.

This time, as we came around the bend, I saw a sign and a railroad crossing, and I immediately knew that there was a camera in the vicinity.

As a matter of fact, I now know that there are 3 cameras, 2 that you can see at the top of the roof gable of the building, and another that is across the tracks.

I have no access to the two cameras I photographed (known as the East Camera and the West Camera), since I am not a member, but I can view the one on the station side of the tracks (known as the PTZ Camera).

You never know what you will find, as you ride the rails.

The Metropolitan Lounge At Moyihan

Happy May 1st birthday of Amtrak. They are now 54 years old.

I promised that I would get some better photos, on our return to Moyniham Train Hall.

Here is the view of the Metropolitan Lounge, high above the gates to the tracks.

As you can see, comfy seating, and look at the food they have for their guests...

I had a large berry scone, with an ice tea, and my Husband had a panini, with a soda.

No reason to go downstairs to the food court, to get something.

This was great!
