Yesterday I had the distinct pleasure of hitching along with a friend of mine, on a lunch date. She was meeting with the man who was one of the founding members of Delta Force and the author of "Inside Delta Force".
The book, which is his autobiography, just happens to be the book that the TV show "The Unit" is based on.
Eric Haney is a soft spoken man with a wonderful Southern accent. He had literally just finished driving across the Country in 3 days and that fact alone, is proof that this man still has "The Right Stuff". I was totally in awe.
The conversation skipped around. We talked of the show itself, but also his years with the Army Rangers, especially with Delta Force. A little of his life post Delta and of course, working in Hollywood as a writer and co-creator of a show on Network Television. We even had time to tell him a little of our stories.
In cool stuff for me, I had some of my many questions about the locations used in "The Unit" answered. Some of my Delta Force ones answered, too.
I told him that I came around to "The Unit" via a romance board and that I was surprised that I liked his book enough to read it twice. He told me that he wrote it not just for the military aficionados, but for the common man and woman. He cast a wide net, was the way it was explained to me and as a non military reader, I appreciated that.
Obviously, I am a real fan of "The Unit", but I would also like to point out that his book is excellent and worth the read.
He touches on his going through Selection for Delta, his time in Beruit, the hostage rescue attempt during the Carter administration, and more. I found it all fascinating.
The reason "The Unit" looks so authentic is due to the fact that this man, did it in real life, first.
It was an honor to meet him.
My hubby is now a fan of The Unit, and I think this book may be a Christmas item for him...thanks!

ReplyDeleteI am so jealous. Did Irby call him too?
