My Water Post For Today.
As we were driving down to Atlantic City, NJ, we took a lovely road that followed the Jersey Coast. I had taken a look at the map, before I began driving it and I knew we were going to pass a lake on the route. I decided that if I could, I would stop for a minute and shoot a few shots of it. I did manage to stop and I got this photo.
I hope you like it.
Wow, you make New Jersey appear non-toxic. (LOL!)
ReplyDeleteI've been by that lake many, many times in my life, mostly when I was very young. My grandfather would take us and his little 16' wood motorboat to Tuckerton and on out Great Bay Boulevard (aka Seven Bridges Road) to Captain Mike's to use the boat ramp. From there we'd go fish the bay, often around the old fish factory (see also this PDF file).
It was also known as "The Stink House" and with good reason. I do remember times when the odor was quite abundant. I would have started going there in the early seventies, its very last operational days. I also remember they used to blow a very loud (Simpsons-intro-like) factory whistle at noon (even after it shut down operationally, I believe, but I'm not sure now) and thus we and other fishermen in the area knew it was time to dig into our lunches—sort of a fisherman's version of Pavlov's famous experiment.
The place was always fascinating, especially to a young kid seeing this giant industrial building on a fairly small island and watching it decay and surrender to the elements over the years.
Beautiful picture, Angel. The only parts of New Jersey I've ever been in are the seamier parts of Newark and Camden (you work in HIV/AIDS, you go where the people are), and it's so nice to know it's not all like that. ;-)
ReplyDeleteWow, Dim Skip, I learned a lot today and even found the ruins on Google Maps. Not close to where I took that picture, but fascinating to read about in your links.
ReplyDeletePiglet: Did you know they grow Cranberries in Jersey? We most certainly didn't until my fried told us that Ocean Spray is down there in Jersey, too?
I can't believe I am saying this and I am sure someone is going to take my NY creds away from me for voicing it.
Our trip to Jersey was very nice and we saw quite a bit of the state that we have never seen at all. It was very beautiful.
It's nice to see photos that show the beauty of New Jersey. My only impression of NJ evolved from watching Roseann Rosannadanna on SNL (I wore my new blouse to NJ and still can't get the stink out!) or comments fm Jon Bonjovi (You're from Jersey? What exit?). It's nice to know that NJ offers more than the Turnpike and toxic fumes! Thanks, Angel
