Earthquake In L.A. And Baggage In NY



I am still in New York, but my guys have finally landed, after spending a hellish day dealing with American Airlines and their baggage SNAFU. Their flight was to take off early in the day. They finally touched down almost 2 hours late and they did not get their baggage. I hear that their flight had a total of 3 bags that made it onto the aircraft.
My husband said it was a major mess and the workers were banging their heads against the wall, from the frustration of having a room keep filling with bags that couldn't go anywhere. More from him at a later date, I would bet.

While we were all still on the East Coast, we heard the word that there was an earthquake in L.A. From what I can tell, our house and all should be just fine, but the possible meaning of this quake, is still unknown and thus, adds a bit of fear to me, here on the East Coast.

Family Reunion 2008


Family Reunions are a strange animal. You end up meeting many people who you have never met before, but as you look at them all, you realize that on some level, these people are familiar to you. Why, because they share some sort of blood and of course, genetics with you.
Our reunion was located at a Yacht Club on Long Island, NY. It is my Dad's family and actually, we were only a small branch of the tree as it ended up and my old surname was not shared by about 90 percent of the people.
We managed to get almost all my siblings to attend, so we did have a little catch up time with each other, which I appreciated. Other relatives turned up, too and may I say that it was great to see them at a happy event, instead of a funeral. :-)
When we walked in, they had a display of pictures of the family in the front of the room and lots of Italian themed swag items.
Mardi Gras type beads, in the colors of Italy.
A wrist band in the same colors, with the name of the town in Italy that my Dad's family came from.

As the oldest member of my branch of the family (how did THAT happen) I received a cute bear and my son got another one for being the youngest member of the family. I gave my bear to my sister and my son gave me his, so all's right in our world. :-)
Italian food was served, Italian music was played and the branches of the family were showcased up on the walls, so you could trace people to see where we fit in together. I just wish I had more time, but due to lots of other things going on right now, things were incredibly hectic. I am still glad I attended and I did share business cards with some members of the family and maybe new connections have been made. Oh and the person who went to the trouble to put this reunion on, has just published a book that I plan on buying. He has us traced back in Italy to the 1700's, which I am amazed at.

New York State of Mind

Off on vacation and there was no time to deal with posts in advance. Probably see you all on the flip side, after 7/30.

Steely Dan At Nokia Theatre L.A. "Think Fast"


This years Steely Dan tour is called Think Fast and I didn't have to think too much, to take them up on the offer of an evening of great music. We decided to park in North Hollywood and take public transportation over to the new Nokia Theatre. Nokia is right across the street from Staples Center, in Downtown LA. The complex is still under construction, but the theatre is finished and it's fabulous. We ended up getting $49 tickets up in the Mezzanine Section, dead center. No one in front of us, so our site lines were perfect! We sat down early and then waiters came around with gourmet chocolate with the Lexus symbol on them and flutes of champagne.
I have never been treated to such luxury at a concert before! It was wild and it only seemed to be going on up in the Mezzanine. Wow!
A family of 4 turned up next to us and I ended up with a young male sitting next to me who was definitely savvy to the ways of Steely Dan, but had never seen them in concert. You should have seen his eyes shine when the concert finished and we discussed such things as Keith Carlock. Andrew, if you ever see this, thanks for sharing your concert experience with me.

Wow, what to say. I have been to 7 Steely Dan Concerts since 2003 and yes, I can definitely tell there is a difference this year. Confidence, total confidence in what they do and how they execute the performance for the audience. Everything has little tweaks of rearrangements, sometimes Walter is taking a more active part in the guitar, or a new open, perhaps. Donald was even more in command of his voice and he exudes total confidence that he will not screw up. There have been some times where screw ups on Glamour Profession lyrics were the norm...not this tour, he nailed it! As a matter of fact, I only heard one missed lyric the whole night. No startled deer in the headlights looks, just cool as all get out and so Ray Charles in his look, as his head bounces around. It's a beautiful thing.
Someone said that Walter owns Gaucho and I want to state for the record that HE DOES!!!! I screamed "GO Walter!", at one point. No mass exodus to the rest room in this crowd, I was totally surprised and glad to see him get the respect he deserves!
I hope someday to see something else performed by him...Dr. Wu, perhaps? :-)

All too soon, it was over and we headed home. Unfortunately, the mass transportation system was having a bad day and delays on two lines caused us to make it back home at almost 1:30AM. Great time anyway and I can't wait until Honda Center, to get to see this again and take better notes.

It was unforgettable...oh and Catherine Russell performed for us in the babe choir. A nice treat.

Learning To Fly - Apple Valley...And Dad


We woke up to a beautiful day and even at 7AM we knew that Apple Valley was finally going to be a go. I get a call at about 9:45AM saying that they were ready and about to take off. My husband asked if he could fly in the back seat and he was given permission to do so. They flew out to Apple Valley, which is in the area of the Mojave Desert, near Victorville. To get there, they flew by Palmdale, Victorville (natch) and finally landed in Apple Valley. Hubby said they hit a bit of turbulence around Palmdale, but otherwise had an uneventful flight. He did say that they saw some unmanned aircraft being tested on the route. Unmanned aircraft are used in dangerous war zones and get tested before delivery to the Government or other customers.
They had lunch at Leonard's Airport Cafe. Hubby said the food was very good and they had a good time there. He even mentioned the wall with signatures on it. Pilots sign their name and home airport on the wall.

My son's teacher did some of the flying, on the return leg of the trip and my son did the rest. They do that, so that my son learns to read the map and navigate via the visual cues.

Next up...night flying to Santa Barbara.

Inside Delta Force With Mr. Eric L. Haney


Yesterday I had the distinct pleasure of hitching along with a friend of mine, on a lunch date. She was meeting with the man who was one of the founding members of Delta Force and the author of "Inside Delta Force".
The book, which is his autobiography, just happens to be the book that the TV show "The Unit" is based on.
Eric Haney is a soft spoken man with a wonderful Southern accent. He had literally just finished driving across the Country in 3 days and that fact alone, is proof that this man still has "The Right Stuff". I was totally in awe.

The conversation skipped around. We talked of the show itself, but also his years with the Army Rangers, especially with Delta Force. A little of his life post Delta and of course, working in Hollywood as a writer and co-creator of a show on Network Television. We even had time to tell him a little of our stories.
In cool stuff for me, I had some of my many questions about the locations used in "The Unit" answered. Some of my Delta Force ones answered, too.

I told him that I came around to "The Unit" via a romance board and that I was surprised that I liked his book enough to read it twice. He told me that he wrote it not just for the military aficionados, but for the common man and woman. He cast a wide net, was the way it was explained to me and as a non military reader, I appreciated that.
Obviously, I am a real fan of "The Unit", but I would also like to point out that his book is excellent and worth the read.
He touches on his going through Selection for Delta, his time in Beruit, the hostage rescue attempt during the Carter administration, and more. I found it all fascinating.

The reason "The Unit" looks so authentic is due to the fact that this man, did it in real life, first.

It was an honor to meet him.

Learning To Fly - Go Arounds


My son has been scheduled to Fly Cross Country to Apple Valley for the past few days. They tried to go last Tuesday, but lack of sleep (due to his friend leaving for the Marines) canceled the flight.
They rescheduled it for yesterday. We get down to Van Nuys Airport to find out that there are thunderstorms in the area of the route that they will be flying. So it is decided to delay the Cross Country trip once again and instead, my son will fly pattern work around the airport. Since the teacher had another flight after this one, he sat with me as I worked and we both kept an ear out for my son. Shortly after we begin listening, we hear my son get waved off, due to a plane directly behind him that has mechanical trouble. He immediately does so and the air traffic controler thanks him very much for his prompt execution of the maneuver. I was proud. :-)
Things continue as one would expect for another 2 go rounds and then once again he gets waved off and so he begins to raise the plane again. They immediately call to say he is OK to land and to cancel that Go Round, so he starts again to bring the plane down onto the runway. He gets there finally, but he finds that he is running out of time and runway and he starts talking to the airplane. "Come on plane, lift off, you can do it". He makes it happen with about 30 or 40 feet to spare, thank goodness. In comparison to these two times, the rest of the flight is normal. Quite an experience and a learning exercise, too.

In a good thing for me, I did not see him when he was running out of runway. Ack!

Internet Friends


I have friends that I have made on the Internet and it has enriched my life. One from the Max Martini board is currently visiting Los Angeles and we managed to connect with each other for some quality time. She has now rode a Metrolink Train, seen the VOR at Van Nuys Airport (when I was picking up a Fed X package) and taken a ride from the west side to east side and all around the area I call home.
She is now on her own for the remainder of her vacation.


Another Internet friend, one from my Steely Dan world, recently sent me a bumper sticker that she designed for Walter Becker's latest CD, Circus Money.
Here's a picture of me (with my Steely Dan Tee Shirt) next to the sticker. I made it into a magnet. The sticker is a circle with C$ in the middle. I like how it came out and how cool it looks, sitting on my blue car. :-)

Thanks to my friends, they truly make my life much richer.

Legoland, Indiana Jones Style


Since my son has reached the almost adult age of 17 1/2, Legoland is no longer on our "must see" list of things to do. A shame, cause my son really loved the place in his younger days. Walking on Hollywood Blvd. the other day, I saw this sign and fell in love with the little skeleton in the left lower corner, so I almost missed my light, grabbing my camera and shooting this picture. I guess they have an Indiana Jones ride or exhibit going on at the park and this is just letting the public know about it, but I still think it's cool.
For those who notice the details...yes, that is the same billboard I shot to show off the birds sitting on signs together.

Death Angel


Linda Howard has a new book out called Death Angel. A weird title and being it was in hardcover, I figured I would wait for it to come out in paperback, before I bought it. I have not been impressed with her work these past few years and hate to have to spend the better part of $20 for a hardcover. Well, then Suzanne Brockmann's board got into action, telling me that even though they have hated her past few years efforts, they absolutely love her latest book. When I saw it in a store a few days ago I broke down and $17 later, I own Death Angel.
What to say...if you can read until page 11 and not get totally hooked, you are a heartless unromantic person and this post is not aimed at you.
I find it similar to several of her earlier works, especially Kill and Tell and All the Queen's Men. Several reviews also mention it's similarity to Son of the Morning and I guess I see that too. All three books are keepers for me and I have read them multiple times. So now I get to add another to that list.

I absolutely loved the book and found Death Angel to be a great read.

The Unit - Back In Production


I took off Monday, due to my "Other" son leaving for the Marines in the middle of the night. Working with almost no sleep is not my idea of a fun time. :-)
I figured since I was off anyway, I would schedule a Doctor's Appointment that day.
As I ran that errand, what should I see...but a Unit Production sign hanging on a light pole. Always a wonderful sight, normally and a real treat after the roller coaster ride of whether or not CBS was going to renew the show.


Their New Season starts on Sunday September 28th at 10PM.

A new character has been named for the show.

Nicole Steinwedell is joining the cast of CBS' military drama The Unit in a potentially recurring role as Bridget Sullivan, a strong female character who'll pull her own weight with the Delta Force.

Flowers At Glendale


I was riding the train last week and happened to glance out when we reached Glendale Station. Instead of a parking lot filled with green trees, the station was entirely filled with trees covered with yellow flowers. I tried to get a picture out the train window, but the windows are currently very foggy. It has to do with how the trains get cleaned. Sometimes they are clear as glass and sometimes not. This seems to be one of those times when they are not. When this situation happened in the past, they changed their cleaner and it helped. The bottom line is that I needed to get off at Glendale, to do justice to the beauty that is, Glendale Station right now. I have a work friend who lives in the area and I asked her for a lift and she kindly did so on Friday afternoon.



I had originally hoped to grab a few shots and jump on my train as it went inbound into Los Angeles. Unfortunately for me, I was totally captivated with the entire station and took many, many more pictures then I intended. Of course that took more time then I had, so I ended up catching my train on it's way out to Santa Clarita.

Men At Work 2


Six months ago, I featured the workers of this building in a post that I called Men At Work. The building itself is still under construction and the other day, I pass by as they are hanging large sections of the buildings outer structure onto the "I" beams. This one section they were working on, just wouldn't attach and they eventually pushed it out and turned it around. It then got stuck in it's spot backwards and last I saw them, they were not having any luck budging it from it's incorrect position. I must have watched them for 15 minutes, but they never did get it to move and I finally had to give up and go to work.

Raising A Boy Child - "Other" Son #1 Has Left The Building


He's Gone!

As the hours raced toward their predictable end this morning, I found that I couldn't catch even a few hours sleep. My son and I stayed out in the family room...why bother with a bed for 4 hours. I did take a quick power nap for an hour, but otherwise, I stayed up with my real son. He was surfing the web and "talking" to the ROTC kids who were still up at that late hour. How many...several, as I found out later.
2AM comes and we start to get ready to go over to his friend's house for the final assembly and drive over to the Recruitment Office. When we get there at 2:30AM, we find out that not only are his Mom, Father and his Father's 2nd Wife there. His cousin who is the same age and shared a Graduation Party with him just a short month ago, is there. Also a former boyfriend of his Mom's had a son who partly lived with them for a while...he was there, too. A former ROTC Cadet friend rounded out the crew. Leave it to this son, to have an entourage with him. :-)
We were a few minutes early, so we all stood outside the Recruitment Office waiting for someone to show up. When he finally shows, he doesn't have a key and has to call to someone else to get one. That person finally comes and the first order of business, after we finally got in, was that my "Other" Son had to pee in a cup and so off he goes to the "ladies" to do so. They will be checking for drugs and Alcohol in his system. He will get kicked out, if there is too high a level.
We got told about what the first week will entail, his uniform issue, in processing, shots, etc. He won't even be assigned to a platoon until the end of the first week. At that time he will be able to let us know, via letter, what his address is. We won't see that address until the end of the second week and at that time, we can start sending letters to him. (Cindy, I swear I will get you that address as soon as I get it.) :-)
The Recruiter also told us that being people from all areas of the Country converge on this training base, the chances are good that he will end up sick with some virus and to not be surprised when he mentions this in a letter. It's normal. He also said to be creative with titles or such on the envelopes of letters, to really piss off the Drill Instructors...
I told my "Other" son that when the D.I.'s are being particularly bad, to say, "Is that the worst you can do? The Airforce was harder then this." lol

Then it was final goodbyes for 3 months. With his Mom crying as her baby walked away, we got into our cars and the Recruiter drove off with our Family, friend and colleague.
He has been such an influence on our lives and we will miss him terribly.

In the final moments, my son was given a last task. To come over to his friend's house occasionally and boot his computer, to do updates and make sure all is well.
He will honor that commitment as best he can and hopefully visit with his best friend's Mom and little sister at the same time.

We are all going to miss him so much.

Raising A Boy Child - Last Night


Last night was the final night and kind of our own farewell to "Other" son #1. They got kicked out of "Other" son #1's house, since his mom had to clean up and do some of the food preparation for today's party. So they planned a sleepover here at the "angel" house. With 5 males all under 18 roaming in my fridge and it being a Friday, when the fridge is normally empty, I figured I had better stop to shop on the way home. A good thing I did, because they tucked into the stuff mighty fast. :-)
We watched Numb3rs (which my family is really getting into, thanks Ed) and then a new show, Flashpoint (both on CBS). Then it was time for us to go to bed.
The kids, of course, have other plans and I hear they were still up at 4AM. When we got up at 6Am, they were dead to the world and we left them that way. "Other" son #2 had to get to work at 11AM, (oh the life of the working stiffs). lol
So he hitched a ride with me when I went to get bagels at around 8AM. The others slept on until around 9AM, when they got up, packed up and ran back to "Other" son #1's house. They were needed to help with the big going away party that's on all day today. I and my husband were, of course, invited. :-)
So hubby and I will hopefully make an appearance after he gets off from work tonight.

My "Other" son #1 told us that he plans to see no one on Sunday, that's his family's final day with him and they get a private goodbye and then take him off to the recruitment center at like around 2AM on Monday morning. The Marines are going to get one very tired out kid. lol
Serves them right.

Saugus Speedway


Back when my husband and I moved to Santa Clarita, there were two things we would hear in our mobile home down the canyon. One was Bermite blowing up and the other was the race cars speeding around the oval at Saugus Speedway on Friday and Saturday nights. It never bothered me and even when we moved up to our house, if we walked out the front door, we could still hear them off in the distance. Though I never attended a race, I always wanted to someday.
Friday's were for amatures. Stock cars, figure 8's, demolition derbys. A friend of ours used to enter those Friday races for years.
Saturday was the Winston Cup, among other things. Real racers would travel to our humble corner of the world. Lots of people would attend those races.
Well, that all changed after the Northridge Earthquake. The owner, the Bonelli Family, decided that the grandstands were too expensive to replace, so no racing is allowed anymore. The stands are still in existance, but they are fenced off and in total disrepair. When I went to the Valley Fair the other week, I had my first "up close" look at what was left of them. It was very sad to see and all I could think of was the generations of people who had wonderful times watching these races. Now days, they have to drive almost 2 hours, over to the California Speedway.

It's a real shame.

Sunsets And Fires Once Again


This is a picture of last nights sunset. Thankfully the fire that caused all the stuff that's currently floating around in the air, is nowhere near me. This fire is over in Santa Barbara. The stuff in the air around that fire, has made our sunsets change from a normal sunset, into an firey orange ball at night. Didn't we just do all this a few months ago?

By the way, due to last October's fires we are having brown bear sightings and even mountain lion sightings within about a mile of my house. A place called Haskell Canyon.
Nowhere for them to live, I guess. Sigh...

Ice Series


I have mentioned books that I read, on this blog before.

The past week or so I have been in catch up mode on an author I heard of on Suzanne Brockmann's board. I had read the first 2 books in Anne Stuart's "Ice" series about a year ago, but I recently heard that her 5th book had just been released, "Fire and Ice". Well, I went searching on Amazon.com and could see that I had to read the other two books in the middle, before I could tackle the new one. So I picked them up, relatively inexpensively and have been immersed in her world once again. That's the nice thing about stories that relate, they have a world that you appreciate and love returning to. Suzanne does this very well, so does Linda Howard with the MacKenzie's and of course Nora Roberts/JD Robb.
I had totally loved the second book, "Cold as Ice" with the romantic lead named Peter Jensen. He is so cold, that he would sleep with a male suspect, just as easily as a female. He used sex as a weapon in his secret agent work and I found that Anne Stuart wrote this very believably. I was shocked, as a matter of fact, since this is so different from where romance novels usually go.
So I picked up the last three books thinking that she could not beat that 2nd book and well, she might not have, but she came so very close that I can't say for sure what book is my favorite. They are all excellent.

If you are looking for a very good read that turns the heat way up, the ICE series, is worth the time.

Raising A Boy Child - One Week Left To Boot Camp


We are down to the last few days of life with "Other" son #1.
Boot Camp at the Marine Corps Training Base, in San Diego, is looming off in the distance. Only 6 more days to go.

Today, I wish to indulge in a public letter to my "Other" son.

I have had almost a year to get used to your enlisting in the Marines. I am not happy with it, but I am resigned and ready to do whatever you need done, to make this happen.

First off: I want you to know that my family is so proud of you. You are growing up, taking responsibility and moving your life ahead. These are all good things. May you continue to use the skills that the Marines give you, to reach even further.

Second thing: If you ever need a place to crash, in Santa Clarita, look no further then here. You want to visit with us or some of your friends, always know that you are welcome. We love you and would be honored to help.

Finally, the most important thing. If you end up somewhere and your life is in jeopardy, when you sit there and think, what do I have to live for, no one cares about me. I want you to know in your heart of hearts that this family...me, my husband and my son love you. We want you to live. We will mourn your death, if you die, so please do everything in your power to STAY ALIVE! Even if we never see you again, that's fine. We know that situations change people, but don't ever think that you are not loved. You are...always.

Bridgeport Marketplace - Oh Give Me A Home...Where The Geese Roam


My humble Cities latest retail project is a lovely development called Bridgeport Marketplace. Never mind that it sits on land that is part of Valencia Northbridge. They wanted it to be part of tony Bridgeport and obviously, that's that. :-)
The land has been vacant for the past 15 or so years, due to the fact that an inactive Fault runs through it. They didn't want to build houses on it and so they left it fallow. Well, we now have many shops and a Bristol Farms Market coming to the development. I hope someone did the full disclosure thing with these future tenents, but that's not actually the subject of this post. This is...

If you remember, I did a post several months ago. It concerned the area across the street from this development, the real Bridgeport. It's an area that was built with lots of man made waterscapes. Well, the birds of the area have discovered it and have angered the residents with their poop and their presence. Things haven't changed much in the months that have passed, except that the developer of the new Bridgeport Marketplace has added a waterscape at the corner of its development. It's beautiful, don't get me wrong, but geese have found it and they like to go back and forth between the two waterscapes. This occurs in the morning and in the evening, when they get hungry.
So off they go, crossing 10 LANES OF TRAFFIC!!!!!
Needless to say, it's become a major hazard for our local drivers and a sad way to kill off lots of geese. The article is here.

I don't know what the final outcome of this will be, but it saddens me once again.

Get Smart Movie


It's July 4th weekend and what better way to spend an evening, then seeing a movie. We decided to try the new Get Smart movie and see if it was faithful to the original, or a waste of our time. I would like to state right off the bat that I LOVED this movie. I loved the original and with the writing team that created the show on board, this one had all the right lines and all the right spirit. Much of the outdoor scenes toward the end of the movie were shot in Los Angeles, Disney Concert Hall, train tracks immediately to the south of downtown, Airports, including Van Nuys and even a Cessna Airplane.
For me, the coolest thing was that the Spy Museum in Washington DC figured into the show. I have a friend who volunteered at the museum as a Docent and has told me stories about it. Now I just have to check with him to see if it was rendered faithfully or not.

I was a worthwhile movie and I don't usually say that often.

Water On A Hot Day


Hot fun in the summertime...

We have had some real hot days recently and on one of those afternoons, I took a walk over to the fountain, in Union Station. I have photographed it before, but this time I was really into the lovely gold water urn. I took a picture of it and after I did, I noticed that there was a flag flying in the building directly behind it and so I took this one, with the flag back there. I like how it came out, the water looking so inviting that I want to put my hands in it and then something patriotic.

When I turned around after shooting the photo up above, I noticed several people standing by another water feature in this patio area. I had never seen it before and I spent about 10 minutes watching the fish swim and then I noticed that there was a turtle zipping around the water lilies.



So I took a few pictures of him, too. If you look close, toward the top side of the photo, you can see Mr. Turtle with his head poking out of the water.

It was lots of fun to watch and a really lovely peaceful place to rest for a few.

Freedom means a lot to people. Having the freedom to choose who or what you want to be, is important and today we celebrate our Countries fight to be free.

What follows, is the actual text of The Declaration of Independence.



In CONGRESS, July 4, 1776.
The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,


When in the course of human Events, it becomes necessary for one People to dissolve the Political Bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent Respect to the Opinions of Mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the Separation.

We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed.

That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is in the Right of the People to alter or abolish it, and to institute a new Government, laying its Foundation on such Principles, and organizing its Powers in such Form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient Causes; and accordingly all Experience hath shewn, that Mankind are more disposed to suffer, while Evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the Forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long Train of Abuses and Usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object, evinces a Design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their Right, it is their Duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future Security.

Such has been the patient Sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the Necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The History of the Present King of Great-Britain is a History of repeated Injuries and Usurpations, all having in direct Object the Establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let the Facts be submitted to a candid World.

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public Good.

He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing Importance, unless suspended in their Operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the Accommodation of large Districts of People; unless those People would relinquish the Right of Representation in the Legislature, a Right inestimable to them, and formidable to Tyrants only.

He has called together Legislative Bodies at Places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the Depository of their public Records, for the sole Purpose of fatiguing them into Compliance with his Measures.

He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly Firmness his Invasions on the Rights of the People.

He has refused for a long Time, after such Dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative Powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the Dangers of Invasion from without, and Convulsions within.

He has endeavoured to prevent the Population of these States; for that Purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their Migrations hither, and raising the Conditions of new Appropriations of Lands.

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary Powers.

He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the Tenure of their Offices, and Amount and Payment of their Salaries.

He has erected a Multitude of new Offices, and sent hither Swarms of Officers to harass our People, and eat out their Substance.

He has kept among us, in Times of Peace, Standing Armies, without the consent of our Legislature.

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil Power.

He has combined with others to subject us to a Jurisdiction foreign to our Constitution, and unacknowledged by our Laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation:

For quartering large Bodies of Armed Troops among us:

For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from Punishment for any Murders which they should commit on the Inhabitants of these States:

For cutting off our Trade with all Parts of the World:

For imposing taxes on us without our Consent:

For depriving us, in many Cases, of the Benefits of Trial by Jury:

For transporting us beyond the Seas to be tried for pretended Offences:

For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an arbitrary Government, and enlarging its Boundaries, so as to render it at once an Example and fit Instrument for introducing the same absolute Rule in these Colonies:

For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments:

For suspending our own Legislatures, and declaring themselves invested with Powers to legislate for us in all Cases whatsoever.

He has abdicated Government here, by declaring us out of his Protection and waging War against us.

He has plundered our seas, ravaged our Coasts, burnt our Towns, and destroyed the Lives of our People.

He is, at this Time, transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to complete the Works of Death, Desolation, and Tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty and Perfidy, scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous Ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized Nation.

He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the Executioners of their Friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.

He has excited domestic Insurrections among us, and has endeavoured to bring on the Inhabitants of our Frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known Rule of Warfare, is an undistinguished Destruction, of all Ages, Sexes and Conditions.

In every stage of these Oppressions we have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble Terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated Injury. A Prince, whose Character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the Ruler of a free People.

Nor have we been wanting in Attentions to our British Brethren. We have warned them from Time to Time of Attempts by their Legislature to extend an unwarrantable Jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the Circumstances of our Emigration and Settlement here. We have appealed to their native Justice and Magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the Ties of our common Kindred to disavow these Usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our Connections and Correspondence. They too have been deaf to the Voice of Justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the Necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of Mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace, Friends.

We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the World for the Rectitude of our Intentions, do, in the Name, and by the Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly Publish and Declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be, Free and Independent States; that they are absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political Connection between them and the State of Great-Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm Reliance on the Protection of the divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our sacred Honor.

Person of Character


My husband has watched his child grow up, especially in these past 4 years. In our local paper, every week they feature a Person of Character and he submitted our son as a candidate for the honor. He had no idea if his recommendation would be approved or if it would be ignored. In good news for him, his son is going to be awarded this honor today. Congratulations my son and congratulations to my husband, who had the courage to try to get recognition for his son.
As I have mentioned many times in this blog, our son has worked on drafting projects for his former High School, which includes 4 years of school maps. Drafting plans for our audio/video room in our new Church,that is currently under construction. Rumor has it that the real blueprints utilized my son's CAD drawings. He has run the audio board for the past 2 years for the 9AM Mass. Being he was up at 6AM every morning, I am sure that what he would have rather be doing is sleeping, but he made a commitment to the man who trained him and has honored that commitment.
Then there were the many events he participated in with his Air Force JROTC group. 4 years is a lot of time to give huge chunks of time to an organization, but he did it. From parking duty at football games, Reagan Library Egg Hunt worker, Emergency Preparedness worker, NASCAR worker, Muddy Buddy Worker, just to name a few. That doesn't even count all those competitions he either competed in or photographed.

He could have been one of those students who end up stoned, out in the back of the school, but he chose to be a good citizen and that will be celebrated today.

In My Business,You're Never Far From Layoffs


June 30th rolls around and due to the economy and other factors, my workplace decides to lay off some of our staff. I am sure things like the Writer's Strike earlier this year and the fear of a potential Actor's Strike, added to my companies fear that money will continue to be tight, going into the new fiscal year. I can't say I blame them, I am worried about how to make ends meet with the increasing cost of gas and other products.

It's always a shame when people you have worked with for sometimes close to a quarter century, are let go and so today was a very bittersweet day.
At a point in time, I was one of them, let go, before I had hardly begun my career journey. Thankfully for me, I was brought back 3 weeks later, but you never forget the feeling.

I wish my colleagues well, wherever life takes them and maybe we will work with each other again someday.

Bermite


In one of life's little ironic moments, I spend more time then I would want to, standing on a Federal Superfund Site. Whittaker-Bermite was a munitions maker from 1934 all the way to 1987. When we moved to the Santa Clarita Valley, our humble mobile home was within about a mile or so of Bermite and many a time our house would be rocked by an explosion coming from the property. We finally moved out of it's immediate area and about 2 years later, it finally closed down. Being that train tracks cross the very front of the property, the City decided to build it's first train station on the property, utilizing a long term lease, with the new owners. The price was right and that is how this situation occurred.
When I stand up on the platform, I am within feet of THIS sign and it's ominous warning.



One of the things that has come to light over the past 10 years is that not only is the property contaminated, the chemicals have moved into our water table and this has contaminated our water with perchlorate. Several of our local wells have been closed, due to it. It's a scary thought, but I keep hoping that most of the bad stuff is further up in the canyon and not near the offices and main road, where we are located. One could hope.
