Route 66 Ends Here

There is not much to commemorate the end of "The Mother Road", Route 66. A small plaque in the park by Ocean Blvd. and Santa Monica Blvd. That's about it. No road sign, no "You Have Made It" sign. Nothing.

I have actually been privileged to see the very beginning of the route, on Michigan Avenue in Chicago and now, the very end. Obviously I have seen some points along the way, including a stretch of Sunset Blvd. right near where I work. So it has meaning to me.

One of the coolest things we checked out on "The Mother Road", was Ted Drewes in St. Louis, MO. A definite MUST SEE (or taste) stand. The Concrete is the must have concoction. We were there in October and it was cold. Did that stop anyone? No way!

Part of Route 66 is the parade route for The Rose Parade, Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena. I have been there several times.

No matter where you pick up the road, it's a fun place to go and see that which was and now sometimes isn't.

Get your kicks on Route 66.

Fish Swimming In A Tank

My Water Post For Today.

This was a tank filled with fish at Caesar's Palace.

I was waiting for my husband to arrive and decided to stand by the tank and watch the fish. I don't know what type of fish they are...but they were fascinating to me.

This one guy just stayed with me and stared. It was so funny.

I hope you find them worth the time to view and enjoy.

Land Shark

Wasting away again in Margaritaville...

I believe Jimmy Buffett has struck gold.

I was at his Margaritaville bar in Las Vegas last year and the main drink was as one would expect...a Margarita. This year, my husband and I went to a party at the end of the Conference I was attending and they had something new on their menu. A beer called a Land Shark.

They serve it in a similar way to a Corona, with a wedge of Lime. If you are adventurous, I heard they have something even more exotic...a loaded Land Shark.

Loaded Land Shark

1 12 oz. bottle of Land Shark Lager
1 oz Margaritaville Island Lime

Pour an ounce of Margaritaville Island Lime Tequila into beer bottle. Put your thumb over the top of the bottle, flip bottle upside down and back. Take a swig and enjoy!

I don't know about you, but it sounds interesting to me.

Sometime I hope to manage to have one this way. :-)

Pansies

I love these flowers.

They are pansies and many places put them in, during our temperate winter months.
Unfortunately for me, I rarely get them going, since the fall and Christmas is so busy for me...but once in a while I get it together and plant them. It's so nice to have so much color, in a black and white time of the year.

These were planted at the Church I visited the other day. You can tell they are past their prime a bit...but I still love the colors and felt they were worth taking a photo of.

Maybe next fall, I will plant some here at home.

Enjoy.

It's All About The Hair

Farrah Fawcett died yesterday.

It was no surprise or anything, nothing like Michael Jackson's passing just a few hours later.
On a personal level, for me, it was Farrah who meant more...because it was always about her hair.

I had long hair in college with bangs. Not very different from what I have had for the past few years...say 20 or so years.
That changed in 1978, when I went with my college friend to get my hair cut. A new experience for me. Mom used to cut it, for all those years. Honestly, I have no memory of what I did for 2 years in college. Maybe I waited til I got home and Mom cut it for me. I really don't remember.
All I do know is that I had no idea that you got your hair washed and had to tip people.
I dramatically remember my friend's Mom took us to the Hair Dresser. I was told to not tip the washer and to tip a dollar to the cutter. I had a man cut my hair that day. He asked me what I wanted and I told him that I wanted my hair to be like Farrah...only longer.
He took one look at me and he said, you ARE going to cut that, aren't you.
I guess I was.
So suddenly I had short hair with lots of feathering in it.
Just a few years later, I got married and you can see it in all it's glory there.
Over the years, I kept the feathering and eventually let the length grow...HA!
I brought back the bangs instead of parted hair and I have basically gone that way for 30 years.
Just recently, I have cut it shorter again, but the feathering remains...I just can't get rid of Farrah.

Godspeed to you.

He Makes Me Proud To Be Catholic

Me and the Priest who married me. The former Pastor of my former Church.

We don't see each other often...but when we do, special moments happen.

I don't know why he came to the reception, on Saturday...but when I arrived, there he was. So I sat down with him at the table reserved for the Bride and Groom and we chatted for almost an hour, while the bride and groom had their formal photos taken somewhere else.
It worked out perfect for the three of us. My husband sat with us too, for most of the time.
Subjects ranged from...had he ever visited Rome? Answer, yes. He said that at a point in time, more often then he visited San Francisco.
How many Popes had he actually met? That answer surprised me. He met Pius XII, in the mid 50's and at the same time, met the man who became John XXIII. He met Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II (2 times). As he said, he missed the Pope that ruled for a month (Pope John Paul I). As one would expect, he has not met Pope Benedict XVI, since he has retired from active Church Leadership, though you never know. :-)

He told me an interesting story about the Visit of John Paul II, to Los Angeles. After Mass, they went to the Cathedral at the time, St. Vibiana's, for some lunch. The Pope asked for the restroom and he was directed to one. After a long while they started getting worried when he didn't show up again and went in search of him. They found him talking to the cook, who was making the luncheon meal and he was sampling the food, too. Bet he made that cooks life. :-)

My Husband and I and Father, remembered being at the Mass at Dodger Stadium and it was a wonderful memory for us all. A once in a lifetime experience.

All too soon, the Bride and Groom showed up and Father stayed just long enough to bless the food...when I looked around, he was gone.

I don't know this for sure...but I feel in my heart that he came to talk to me. I had given him my card at the church and told him to call me some time, so we could chat. Maybe he felt this was easier. I don't know...but I appreciated the time spent with me.

Love you Father...always.

Another Wedding In My Life

It was truly years since I was invited to a wedding. Probably 1990, for my own. What is going on is that our friends children have grown up and one by one, they are getting married. This is the 4th one in as many years and I was so glad to see it happen. Once again, my favorite Priest was up on the altar and that made all right with the world in my book.
The Groom is our friends oldest child. He is part Italian and that has always been a connection between his Mom and Me. We both grew up on Long Island, from Italian Families. Meeting her relatives, is like coming home to my own. A very wonderful and rare thing.

I wish them both the best, as their lives together begin in earnest. She has a grown son, who is 22, so I am not sure if children would end up in their equation or not, but no matter what, may their life be full of love and sharing and wonder and joy.

Two Rabbits At The Station

The other day, I was doing my walk around the platform and I noticed that not one, but two rabbits appeared. They do occasionally appear, but to see two, was a bit unusual.
This one managed to be in my vicinity, so I took a photo, before he headed off into the brush, to blend in and get out of my sight.
As I left the far end of the platform and began to walk into the developed area of the station, I looked up at the artwork on the overhangs and saw on the fourth panel, that there were rabbits, which I had never noticed.

I thought it was interesting enough to bring to my blog.

Rabbits, two ways.

The Fountain At St. Clare's Church

My Water Post For Today.

I attended a wedding on Saturday at the same Church I got married at, 19 years ago.
Just this past year they have added additional buildings and this beautiful fountain.

I dare you to not feel cooler, when looking at the lower section of the fountain, with those individual droplets falling into the water. :-)

I hope you enjoy it.

Just For Fun

Another picture of the guys when my "Other" son #1 was in town.
I can't resist posting it.

I especially love my "Other" son #2 in the front with those glasses. lol

Enjoy...I know I do.

Jacaranda's Once Again

I have mentioned these trees before.

The Jacaranda trees are still blooming this month. They are usually a May flowering tree, but they are still brightly purple all around the Los Angeles area.
This tree is right outside my boss' office, so we see it from inside the building, too.
Too bad they make such a mess on the ground and on anything that parks under their branches.

Other then that, they are a pleasure to experience.

Goodbye Wisteria

To say the least, as a lover of plants, I am upset. As a person who, when things get too stressful at work, takes a walk around the lot, to commune with the plants...I am even more upset. But I get ahead of the story.

Last week, we had layoffs. No surprise there. The economy is bad and my station is hurting. I knew it and was basically ready for it. One of the people who got laid off, was our long time gardener. He had worked at the station longer then me and that's saying a lot. His love of the plants in his care could be seen in everything he did. Many a time, we would catch up with each other and chat about whatever plant he was pruning or moving, planting or mulching. I would ask advice and we would shoot the breeze together. Enjoying another day in LA and being alive and there. When there were layoffs, we would see each other and go "you're still here" to each other. This time...there was no one to do that with. My friend, the gardener was gone.
I got to work today and they were working by the front gate. The gate has an overhead trellis with wisteria hanging along it. It is truly beautiful...well, not anymore. When I came out for lunch, the trunk of the plant had been cut out and all that is currently left, is the part that hangs on the trellis. It is, of course dying right before my eyes and will probably be gone, by the time I get to work tomorrow. How incredibly sad.

Since we no longer have a gardener, it was deemed to much trouble to keep.

In honor of a plant that no longer lives at my station, I went into my pictures and found some that I shot last year. To remember that which was and no longer is.

Goodbye Wisteria...I always enjoyed your beauty.

Goodbye Jose...I miss you and your love of the plants.

Signs, Signs, Everywhere Signs

OK...I have seen this sign for many years and have thought to myself that it was a strange sign.

You can't help but cringe at the thought of getting hit by the fence the sign is on.

I was walking by the gate the other night and saw that someone put a message on the sign.
I got a good laugh from it, cause it's so true.

I hope the frank language doesn't bother anyone.

Seafood Hot Pot

We traveled to Sam Woo's on Saturday, after a journey to Santa Monica. I needed a bag of rice and when we stop at the Asian Market, it's almost impossible to resist going to the restaurant next to the store. It was after 2PM and the place was jammed, when we got to Sam Woo's. After a few minute wait, my son and I were seated and we started ordering. As "Other" son #2 taught us, you always order the Seafood Hot Pot. You see one on every table as though it is the must have entree.

It contains lots of different things, Squid, Shrimp, fried Tofu cubes, mushrooms, carrots and cabbage, all swimming in a broth in a clay Hot Pot. It is delicious and when I went to the asian market, I saw some of the ingredients for it. I hope to use a recipe to recreate something similar to the one we get there. Here are a few recipes, that give a general idea of ingredients.

I will let you know if I succeed. :-)

Korean Seafood Hot Pot

1 fresh crab or 500g cooked crab claws

300g squid or octopus, cut into bite-sized pieces

8 fresh scallops

8 medium shrimps, peeled and de-veined

12 medium clams or 500g fresh, small clams, soaked in water

for 20 minutes and scrubbed with a brush

2 medium abalone (optional)

4 large Chinese cabbage leaves (125g), cut into squares

1 cake soft tofu (250g), cubed

2 scallions, cut into lengths

1 bunch chrysanthemum greens or watercress

2 red or green chilies, sliced (optional)

1 teaspoon ground red pepper

Fragrant Seafood Stock:

6 cups water

12 fresh mussels, scrubbed and cleaned

3-inch square dried kelp (konbu)

1 leek, white part only, sliced

7 cloves garlic, crushed

2 teaspoons grated ginger

2 tablespoons chili bean paste

½-1 teaspoon ground red pepper

1 red or green chili, halved lengthwise

2 teaspoons salt

Method:

Place all the Fragrant Seafood Stock ingredients in a pot and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Strain, reserve the stock and discard the solids. Keep the stock warm on low heat. Lift the triangular-shaped "apron" on the underside of the crab. Insert your thumb between the body and topshell at the rear of crab, and pull the carapace off. Discard the grey gills and any green or spongy grey matter on the body. Clean thoroughly, then rinse and drain. Quarter the crabs and crack the claws so the flavors can penetrate. Put the crab, squid, scallops, shrimps, clams, abalone, cabbage leaves and tofu in a large casserole dish or pot. Carefully pour the warm Fragrant Seafood Stock over the contents and bring to a boil. Cover and simmer for 5 minutes until cooked. Remove from the heat, then add the scallions, chrysanthemum greens and chilies. Sprinkle the ground red pepper and serve with bowls of steamed rice.

I also found a Japanese Version

Directions:
1. Bring a medium pot of water to a boil over high heat.
2. Add soy sauce, mirin, and dashi to the pot of water.
3. Throw veggies and seafood into the pot and eat as you cook.

Trumpet Flowers?

Anyone have an idea what this plant is? For want of a better name, I will call it a Trumpet Flower.

It is growing outside our department's window.

I see it from my boss' office and one day last week, I took a walk over to it.

I have never seen anything quite like it. A plant filled with trumpet flowers of some sort.

There are two plants and one seems to be a different color from the other.

One a yellow color and the other carrying a pink shade in the trumpet flower.

Pretty and interesting. That's LA.

Updated to add that after a bit more research, I found out that the name of the plant is Angel's Trumpet. You can read about them here...Angel's Trumpet.

Fountain At The Chumash Indian Casino

My Water Post for today.

Since Steely Dan is so much on my mind this week, I thought I would bring you to the location of the first concert I saw with them in 2007.

It was the Chumash Indian Casino in Santa Ynez, California. As you walk into the casino you come to a staircase and escalator area with this striking water sculpture at both ends of it. They have the colors changing constantly and of course, the sound of the water falling down through the glass (or plexaglass) pieces.
It is just beautiful and it almost makes you forget that you can smell cigarettes and hear the slots, just past this entryway.

I hope you enjoy.

A New Car In The House

It's not the best picture of my car, but it's a start at introducing my latest to the world at large...or at least to my blogs fans. (Ignore all the shiny things that look like dents, they are reflections).

We needed a car for my son. Flipping 3 people and 2 cars was getting old, very fast. Even though I normally take the train to work, my work has a tendency to become overwhelming without warning and next thing I know, I am driving to work and the kid has no car. So, after the trip to NY, I decided to keep my eyes open for a good deal. As I mentioned the other day, I paid off my home loan. Cool...but I still owed quite a bit on my car and due to that fact, I could not really contemplate buying another and adding a car payment on top of an existing one. I did not want to wait several more years before getting one...so I got creative. I happened to drive by my dealer last Saturday and they had a huge used car sale. All their used cars out front and a band playing, to boot (folk rap...it was interesting to listen to, thanks for asking). Well, I like music and I LOVE a good deal, so I shopped.
In the bunch of cars that were way too expensive for my blood, I found a car that is 6 months older than my newest one and it had only 3 thousand miles more on it. It is a 4 door coupe...those back doors are tiny and open opposite regular doors, but they make it possible to get in and out of the back seats. It's red...fire engine red and it's got a stick shift. Due to the stick, it looks like it will be mine. My son can barely drive a car, none the less, a stick. But I will eventually teach him how. The price was 6 thousand dollars less, then I paid for my car initially.
So I now have 2 cars that are almost the same age...a young age and not a whole lot of miles on them. Even Hubby's Saturn (which is our oldest car, at almost a decade old) has less then 100 thousand miles on it. We are lucky like that.
I picked up a loan at my credit union, that will pay off both cars and it will cost me all of $45 a month more then I am currently paying. It's a 5 year loan, too. Nothing too extreme, in the way of how many years to pay it off.
I am so impressed that I made this deal happen, that I keep pinching myself.

Now if I can just get my stick groove back on... :-)

Steely Dan Rent Party Tour 2009

Steely Dan is touring again this summer. They are doing a few dates here in the U.S. and then head over to Europe for a month. Upon their return, they intend to do multi city dates, that showcase one of their signature albums. One night is Gaucho, one is Aja, and one is Royal Scam. The final night will be Internet request night. That's the one I want to go to... :-)
I also want to go to Royal Scam night. The guitar girl in me never has enough guitar.

Tickets for LA go on sale at 10AM today. I will be there.

Updated to add that I was going to buy just 2 nights...but I went for the whole package of 4 nights...Hubby is going to kill me. :-)

KTLA Signs Off On Analog 6/12/09 At 10:45PM

One station in the Los Angeles area did the transition up right.

KTLA, which has history going way back to the dawn of the TV age, signed off on their Analog broadcast in Prime Time, with their KTLA News Team and long time reporter, Stan Chambers, up on Mt. Wilson, to make the change.

His grandson, Jaime Chambers, also a reporter for the station, was by his side. The old and the new. How cool is that?

Here's how it went. Live...

Thanks KTLA, for acknowledging how important this was, in the history of Broadcast and giving our future generations some video to show when it actually happened.

The Analog Turn Off Arrives And Not Soon Enough For Me

This is it!

Today is the day that we finally turn off our Analog Transmitter.

My station has been simulcasting in 2 formats for the past decade.

It will be such a relief to finally put this behind us and move on.

We decided to shut it off the first minute that we are allowed to, by the FCC...Midnight this morning.

So by the time this posts, we will be totally digital.

If you are in a market that has stations shutting off on the 12th, this is just a reminder to you all to rescan your TV, to get all the digital channels, as they move to their new locations. You might want to do it again, after the 12th, just in case some of them did not tune, when you did your scan of channels.

Anyone need an analog channel 28 transmitter? :-)

Bermite In The Spring

This is Bermite. It used to be a munitions plant, back in WWII. I may have mentioned it before, in regard to the show, The Unit.

I have been walking down to the end of the train platform recently and I couldn't resist taking a picture of these buildings, due to the red and green colors on the roof and the mustard plant growing wild around them.
This location is used by many Television and Film crews, because of the deserted nature of it and it's feeling that it could be in any area of the Country.
No palm trees here, only oak and mountains.
The Unit made it into a location where the members went through SERE (Survival, Evasion, Resistance, Escape) training. I think that I will always think this, when I walk to that far end of the train platform.

Happy Birthday Dear Blog - Let's Start Year Three

This time I will make sure I get this up on my blog's Second Birthday. :-)

I just read last year's blog birthday post and there were several things mentioned, moving into year two. One was that I would continue to document my son and his flying. As we found out shortly after his 18th Birthday, his Flying ended. I was and continue to be heartbroken, but it's his life and not mine. So we carry on.

In an amazing turn of events, I have been able to keep up with my other sons. I did not know if this would be possible, since one of them went off to serve our Country. There have been ups and downs in his service in The Marines. I have enjoyed keeping track of him and his life...if only just little glimpses.

For a while I did not see my Magic son, but that changed around the end of last year. He has definitely been around in my life and I even got to watch him graduate last week. Much more then I expected, when I wrote my blog post last year. He says I will continue to see him, as he joins my son at college. For that I am thankful.

Something I never would have thought of, back in June. I began Water Posts in early November and that has become a favorite for many of you. I know I love going around town and finding those peaceful water spots in the Los Angeles area. I intend to continue, at least for now.

I documented what turned out to be the final year of The Unit. The posts are over on the left side of my blog, if any still want to check them out. I also had a once in a lifetime experience in being able to watch The Unit being shot. I have my friend Roo to thank for the set visit I attended, with her and my Husband.

Due to that set visit, I am now an Administrator of the Max Martini Board. When we saw Max Martini, he asked Roo and myself to pick up the pieces, that were being neglected by his old Administrator. So I am now activating members and deleting Spam. I am honored to do so.
Being the show has been canceled, Max intends to grow his site a bit and I know that will impact me and give me post material, moving into year three.

My favorite author of Romantic Suspense gave up on her board and I still miss it terribly. Suzanne, you were special and your board was special and it will never be replaced. :-(

I even documented my trip across America, which you can find on the left side of this blog. I never thought I would tell that story and thanks to those who asked me to.

Facebook and LinkedIn are two networking sites I joined in January and I have links to them both on the left side of my blog. Facebook especially, has become like crack candy to me. I am totally addicted to knowing what is going on in other people's lives.

Finally, this past year I was voted into the TAC, which is a professional Broadcasting Committee.
It has given me new horizons to explore and forces me to be in the front leading other stations in my Network, at least just a tiny bit. It has truly enriched my life.

Thanks again to all who stop by and even comment occasionally. You...every one of you, are so appreciated and loved.

Year Three...bring it on!

Inside A Unit Renewal Campaign (Take 2)

Last year it was the Yellow Ribbon Campaign. This year, with even more at stake, we have been sending American Flags to CBS and to Fox...trying to get The Unit renewed for another season...or to be made into a theatrical film.

I have been doing my part, helping fire up the troops and sending out flags, but wondered if it was worth the effort. I know I am not the only one who was wondering. On Sunday a sign of hope was seen. It does not mean anything, but it gives me the feeling that I am not doing this just to spin my wheels.

Max Martini mentioned that there has been talk of having Eric L. Haney write a screenplay. Not like someone mentioning writing a screenplay means a darn thing, but at least we fans are not the only ones thinking the big thoughts. :-)

Keep sending in Flags to CBS and to Fox. Both Companies work in TV and in Movies.

Let's get our favorite show back in action on a new mission.

Fired Up!

Sunset Lakeside

My Water Post For Today.

The lake at Eisenhower Park in Garden City, NY. You have seen it before, but this was the view looking toward the setting sun. I love how the tree is framed in the lake and the sunset going on behind it. That sunset reminds me so much of growing up on Long Island, in my parents house. I would see the sun setting through the trees, out the kitchen window...which amazingly faced west. :-)

For frame of reference, my home (which I own free and clear as of about 10AM this morning) has the sun setting toward my dining room and not my kitchen. A totally different experience.

I hope you enjoy it.

Griffith Observatory From The Neighborhood's P.O.V.

We've been having lots of May gray and June gloom recently. I caught a picture of Griffith Observatory the other day, during some of that. This is the neighborhood directly down the hill from the Observatory. They have an interesting view of it. Sort of like the other neighborhood with the Hollywood sign just above them.
I have worked in this area for almost 30 years and I have never seen the view from this area of town. If I had not ended up living in the Valley, this would have been the neighborhood I would have chosen. It's a lovely area and just a 5 minute drive from work. Oh well, too bad for me...I live 35 miles away.

Trains In A Line

Well, I thought it was a cool shot. :-)

4 trains on the platform.
Each almost the same distance apart.

It reminds me of a sideways "Raising the Bar" Ad by AT&T.

Except I keep wanting to nudge that last one, back in line.

Rhapsody In Blue

I may have mentioned this before.

My mother told the story that when she was pregnant with me, she would listen to Rhapsody in Blue, quite often. I remember her playing the record, in my later years, but she tells the story that even when I was very young, I would stop what I was playing with and listen. She was sure that I remembered the music from my time in utro. I can't tell you that for sure, but I do know that I have carried a love of this Gershwin music with me, for my entire life.
I was cleaning out my families house the other day and one of the things I had to go through, were their old records. I knew this one would be there somewhere and I did finally find the 78 rpm copy that she used to play for me.
It got the boot, but before it did, I took this picture for posterity sake.

Thanks Mom, you couldn't have chosen a better piece of music.

Scenes Of A Graduation

There he is, my "Other" Son #2 after the Graduation.

He wore a lei made of cards to the Graduation, but they took it away from him. I guess his family gave him this one filled with money.
How cool is that?

This shot was of the grads entering the ball field. Our local paper covered the story of this man, the one wearing his Marine Uniform. He asked the school if he could wear it, instead of a Graduation Gown and he was allowed to do so. It's the first time the school let this happen. I was glad to see it and applauded him.
We also had a graduate who was allowed to have a seeing eye dog in training, with him. The Principal of the school mentioned this fact to the assembled family and friends.

We also had a sort of streaker. No tighty whities for this guy...he had bright red ones. The cops got him, but of course he totally disrupted the ceremony. What else is new...

You can see pictures of the graduation and even a shot of the streaker...over on this webpage from our local newspaper, The Signal.

That's it basically it, for me and Saugus High School.

My guys are gone...thank goodness.

We'll Remember Always...Graduation Day - Graduation Day 2009

My "Other" son #2 takes the stand today and earns his High School Diploma. Thankfully, I will be in attendance, with my real son and my Husband. We will be cheering him on, along with several of my "Other, Other" sons.

"Other" son #3 graduates.
"Other" son without a number graduates and others not known as son, graduate, too.
I will cheer them all on.

Hopefully it will be a better ceremony then last year...but somehow I doubt it.

Congratulations to you all.

Enjoy your accomplishment...

A Christmas Carol At Union Station

They had ads for days, telling us that this train would appear on the platform on the Friday I was leaving for NY.
Well, overloaded with baggage or not, I walked up onto Platform 12 and checked out the display of Dickens Characters and cool decorated train.

I couldn't go inside, because of all the luggage I was carrying with me, but I did get to see a juggler and the set up.

All in all, it was pretty cool, but it would have been better if I could have gone into the exhibit.

Want to see if the tour stops at your town, check out this Christmas Carol link.

NCIS Fountain At Sunset

My Water Post for today.

It's not really called the NCIS Fountain, but our family has sort of dubbed it that. This fountain is one of several that you can find at our local Mall. Being that Malls are a pretty common thing, as you go around the Country and world, they have a tendency to attract the film industry. NCIS shoots in Santa Clarita and several of their shows have plots that take place around this particular fountain. It's a beautiful one, right next to the theater parking garage and the Princess Cruises buildings. I am sure after booking so many sailings for others, the employees take a break around the seating at this pond.

I hope you enjoy.
