I Am A Lineman For The County

This was the scene happening outside my bosses window yesterday.

I ended up singing the following song, for the next hour.

I am so sorry, I just can't help it. It's probably my favorite Glen Campbell Song ever!

To hear Glen perform the song on the Smothers Brothers Show, click the title.

Wichita Lineman

I am a lineman for the county.
And I drive the main road.
Searching in the sun for another overload.

I hear you singing in the wire.
I can hear you through the whine
And the Wichita Lineman,
is still on the line.

I know I need a small vacation.
But it don't look like rain.
And if it snows that stretch down south,
won't ever stand the strain.

And I need you more than want you.
And I want you for all time.
And the Wichita Lineman,
is still on the line.

  1. Yup, great song!

I have it on my Campbell Classic Hits collection that I spin every once in a while. Dwight Yoakam did a version of it on his Under The Covers album. (Most of the songs he covered were rock/pop. Some were straightforward, others he changed up.) For "Wichita Lineman" think of the difference between classic "Western World" and the Fagen-in-concert version. Yeah, I like the Campbell version best, but the Yoakam one ain't bad if you can handle the rearrangement. An interesting take to hear once anyway (beyond the Amazon sample) if you ever get the chance, but it takes some getting used to.

Sorry, a few quick catch-up comments...

Happy belated 1000-post anniversary. (I don't know how you do it, but I enjoy reading so I'm glad.)

    Happy belated 1st birthday, McKenna.

We've had the Liberty Tax "cross-dressers" in Jersey the last couple years. They ARE an eye-catcher.

  2. Yes I love that song, and it amazes me how well I know it, and I get the impression I always will.
    :-) have a good day.

  3. Dim Skip!

Now that you mention that you have had them for a few tax seasons, I bet if I did some research (which I am not), I would find that they started in your neck of the woods. It is the home of Lady Liberty, after all. :-)

Wichita Lineman is actually not written by Glen Campbell...he is just probably the most popular singer of the Jimmy Webb song. I will check out a You Tube of the Dwight Yoakam version.

Martha: Yep, they say the old memories are the last to go...
We will remember those tunes from our growing up years, forever. lol

  5. I imagine it doesn't hurt your love of the song that Max Martini sang it in "The Unit"... ;-)

  6. Piglet: I am SURE it came right to my mind when I saw those linemen, just because we discussed that very fact and I had just heard Max singing it, a bit ago. :-)

I swear to GOD, if I ever meet the guy again I am askin'...
