Canal Lock #6 - Oswego, New York

Wednesday was busy this week, so I give you the other water post, today. HERE was the first of two posts on Canal Lock #6.

One of the coolest things about living life in Oswego, New York, is the fact that for such a small town, so much is going on. One of my favorite things to do, both back in the day and these days, is watch the Oswego Canal, do its thing. The vast majority of sea traffic has stopped, due to the kids going back to school and vacations being over, but once in a while something goes on and I get to see it.

Oswego has 3 Locks (6 to 8), The others are up by Minetto, Fulton and further north. In case you care, there is no Canal Lock #4. They decided they didn't need it. OK...

This is 2 views of Canal Lock #6. It is about a half mile or so upstream from Lake Ontario.

It has one of the highest lifts, 20 feet, in the entire Canal system...at least the Oswego Canal segment. Fulton Lock #3 is the absolute highest at 27 feet.

If you can see it, there is a pretty substantial water fall over behind the lock in the first photo.

You get the better view of the waterfall, from the Google Maps overhead shot, which you can see below.

I did not feel like walking on the top of the Canal Lock Doors...thank you very much, so I could not get the unobstructed view of the water.

I hope you enjoy.

NOTE: If you are doing these in order, next up will be, Canal Lock #7.
