The drought (which is still ongoing) has taken a toll in our yard, especially the trees and plants we have had for 30 odd years.
In the back we took out the palm tree last year (which I wrote about HERE) and another bush that died. You can see how the wax leaf privet is weird at its end, it is because of the loss of that bush. I had dropped buckets of water on it, when the drought was announced and even that did not help. We pulled it out, last fall and put in bark, to make the area look better.
My Husband mentioned that he would like to try to plant more of the wax leaf privets and so last week, we did so. I think they came out nice, though 2 of them are going to have to fight some of the palm tree roots. Hopefully, we gave them enough growing room, to at least give them a fighting chance to grow decent roots around those from the late palm tree.

Next up, on the side of my yard that has the lilac tree, we had planted 3 grape vines, 2 Thompson Seedless and 1 Red Flame. Over the past 2 years, they have all died. In addition, my forsythia bush (an East Coast bush) finally died. It has never done well, but it needed more water than it was getting. I pulled all of them out, during the winter.
So my decision was that I would plant a few miniature bottle brush bushes. I originally picked up 2 of them, but when I put them in place I saw that I needed 2 more. On Wednesday we bought 2 more, along with an heirloom rose called Ketchup and Mustard. Sort of in honor of me and my Husband. I will let you figure out who is who. :-)
Well, we planted them all and immediately one of the bottle brush bushes died. I took a photo of it and brought it to Green Thumb on Sunday. It was a goner, according to the nurseryman. he said to re-pot it and bring it back and they would give me a replacement. So we did and it was planted and as you can see, things seem to be going OK back there.
Of course, for a few weeks or so, I plan on hitting them with extra water, until they get established.
