My son has a Love/Hate relationship with his cell phone. When my husband got his job at Walmart, it was right after Thanksgiving, 5 years ago. So, there we have a 12 year old child, suddenly walking home from Junior High School. The street is a big one and there have been major accidents...young kids and high speeds don't mix well. So we were concerned and decided that even though (at the time) cell phones were not allowed at his school, we would get him one, for use on his walk home. Anything out of the ordinary and he was instructed to call us! Of course we didn't know that the street he walked on is basically a dead zone, reception wise, but I digress...
So he has had a cell phone for years and even though his cell phone usually looks just like ours, you can tell the difference, because it is the one with the chewed off antenna. It became so obvious, that one of his JROTC friends nicknamed him "Antenna Boy". It hasn't stuck, but when he mentioned the other day that his phone had never recovered from the Muddy Buddy race a few weeks ago, I decided that we need to make a trip to the cell phone store this weekend. As we discuss features, he says to us, just get me a phone, I don't need a camera or all those bells and whistles. Just a phone. What a refreshing change from the normal, where kids own phones that do everything and cost a fortune. He has never made us go over our minute allotment and text messaging doesn't float his boat either. Both major money pits for families with young children.
Do you think he has finally outgrown gnawing on the antenna? Don't put any money down on that. :-)
Updated to add:
He now does have a new cell phone and it comes with an internal antenna!
He whimpered when he saw that...and I just laughed.
