It's been an El Nino kind of a week.
One storm front after the other, with small windows of non rain happening throughout the big storms.
It's day 4 of this mess and I decide to take the bus on Wednesday.
I get picked up at 7:48AM, as usual, on Cinema Drive. The bus turns onto Valencia Blvd and then almost immediately passes the area near Santa Clarita City Hall. A vehicle decides to pass right in front of the bus, on the way to one of the driveways on the right side of the road. This causes our bus driver to hit the breaks hard, skid a bit side ways...and then a miracle occurs. He hits nothing and nothing hits us. We can't believe it. He continues to drive us to the transfer station, just down the road another half mile, but to say the least, I can't even contemplate sleep.
The bus driver asks if we are all OK and we say yes. He goes, "I'm not". I don't blame him at all.
I have been in near misses in these buses many times and so many of them happen in the area of City Hall and COC. As a parent of a college age kid, I can kind of understand the COC thing, but the area of Valencia Blvd by City Hall is also a magnet for people who are not watching where they are going, or decide to take their life in their hands, by cutting off a very heavy bus.
I just don't understand.
I will never, ever understand people who take their life in their hands betting that the operator of the bus/light rail car/train is paying more attention than they are AND can stop before hitting them. I see people making right turns across the front of a bus so often, and I'm amazed there aren't more accidents. My husband works in the body shop for our local transit system, so I hear about a lot of the idiotic things that don't make the paper, as well as the big-dial ones that do (like the light-rail train hitting the car that drove around the crossing arms...).
ReplyDeleteNatural selection at work. Too bad the drivers get made the agent of it; that's a heavy burden to carry.
My poor Sister, I truly feel for you, and the bus driver and everyone else on the bus too. So close to your birthday, this is the last thing you would want to go Thur. Hopefully the rest of your week will be a bit better. Love U :-)
ReplyDeleteMartha: Well, big choice. Take the bus...or drive in the rain. So back on the bus I am. Thanks for the early birthday wish. Love you, too.
ReplyDeleteThat's right Piglet, I forgot about your Hubby. It must be a thousand times worse in the weather you deal with in Minnesota.
