Old Point Loma Light House

There was no way I was going to leave San Diego, without showing off this beautiful lighthouse.

Old Point Loma Lighthouse has not been in use since the late 1800's, due to the fact that this lighthouse is located on top of a hill. Normally, this is the correct location for a lighthouse, but not in this case.
What became immediately apparent was the fact that most of the late spring and summer, the point is shrouded in what we call May Gray and June Gloom.

So the light did not help with navigation through the Bay.

After about 30 years they moved the lighthouse location to the other side of the promontory and lowered it to beach level. There, it directs boats safely into San Diego Bay. Thankfully for me, they left the old lighthouse as a museum.
It's one of the few that were built in the Cape Cod style and I found it to be very lovely.

I hope you do, too.

  1. What was interesting about this building is that the rooms come off the spiral staircase, so everything centers around the fact that this was a working lighthouse.

For any who wonder. This image is straight out of my camera. I didn't have to do a thing, it's just that beautiful.
