Many years ago...1994 to be exact, my boss was told about this idea that one of our Board Members had. He had decided to boost attendance at art events, by creating a channel that would be like a high end MTV.
My boss looked at what this man, Lloyd Rigler, was putting together and she decided that it was a perfect thing to air in our overnight slot. At that point in time, cable companies would punch in odd stuff, if we signed off at the end of our broadcast day. You never knew what would turn up on our channel assignment and we were getting very aggravated about it. This gave us free programming and all we had to do, is transmit it (obviously not free, since we have to pay for the power to transmit, but hey).
We have happily been broadcasting Classic Arts Showcase ever since.
We are lucky in that overnight broadcasts are exempt from the mandatory Closed Caption rule, so it can still be seen every day at around 1AM to 5AM.
Lloyd passed away back in 2003, but his nephew, Jamie, keeps the station running as a fully funded entity of the Rigler Deutch Foundation. They own satellite space through 2022, so it will be around for quite a while, at least. And in that regard, who knows if it will continue beyond that. The original commitment from Lloyd was 12 years and he has almost doubled that already.
Huell Howser went to visit the offices of Classic Arts Showcase in Glendale and the show aired on my station Tuesday. It will repeat on the 27th of this month, if you are in the Los Angeles Area and receive our signal. You can see more on his website, HERE.
It was a great show and I highly recommend it and of course, I totally recommend Classic Arts Showcase.
If you have never seen it, check out their station carriage page on their website, for your local area broadcasters.
I really enjoyed going back into the past. All the music was great(god I'm old), but the whole thing was really interesting, Thank You :-)
