We have storms coming, according to the weather, so on the last day before the storms are due to arrive, we scheduled a make up flying lesson. We woke up to a beautiful day, with no wind in our area. My son though had a feeling that this was not the case in Van Nuys and he was right. He cared more about the fact that wind was going to be a factor in the JROTC shooting off rockets for Rocket Club scheduled for today, then for the flying challenges. I thought that was a good thing, he is comfortable flying into the wind. So...due to the Rocket Club thing, we picked up his friend and due to me having a doctor's appointment not far from Van Nuys, we tandemed it down to the airport in (amazingly not) rush hour traffic. My son complaining "Why did we leave so early?". I would rather be a few minutes early, then stuck in rush hour traffic in the Newhall Pass. Sheesh!
His instructor is feeling much better today and they leave us almost immediately. So that leaves me with Hubby and my son's friend. Hubby hasn't seen him fly off of 34 Right before, so he gets a thrill watching them prepare to take off right outside the hanger door. My son's friend has never seen him fly at all and he is interested, too. We watch, they leave in a slight headwind and commence doing reverse pattern work. I keep an eye out, since I know the rhythm of how long it takes on the "go arounds". Almost to the end of the lesson, that is going extremely well, I finally have to bail and head over to the Doctor's office for my appointment. From what I heard later, the instructor and student were both very, very pleased with the lesson. He is getting comfortable doing the reverse pattern work. Coming at the airport from a completely different direction. As the teacher said, he will very soon be coming at strange airports and he will need to get used to not being in his comfort zone, regarding landing. So this is good practice for him. Another lesson is scheduled for Sunday, but the weather is definitely an issue for that day. We will see what these five fronts bring to the area. First rain is scheduled for later today.
