It's been 3 weeks since my son flew, but there was never any doubt that he would go up today. The day was everything one would not expect in the middle of winter, warm, up in the 80's and just a little breezy. A few friends were over earlier and they tried out a yoke for my son's flight simulator program. He got it from a friend of mine and the kids were fascinated with the new way to fly the planes. It beats a joystick, that's for sure. :-)
So we get to the airport and see that the breeze is enough for it to be 34 a Right take off. Now that they don't have to do touch and goes at the airport, the teacher said they would be doing a tour of VOR's.

First off Santa Paula, then Camarillo and back to Santa Paula and then Van Nuys. VOR's are the way that a plane can home in on an airport. The VOR sends out a signal in all directions and when you receive one, it gives you somewhere to calculate your location in the sky. A good thing, when you can't see, due to low visibility. So off they go to the west and yes, as usual, I am doing work. Well it was such a beautiful day that there was lots of air traffic, that we don't normally see.

People taking out their planes to give them some air time. As I worked I would take pictures of some of the unusual planes. Then about half way through my hour, I see a blue and yellow biplane and it stops right outside my hanger door. So I immediately begin taking pictures of it. It dropped off a pilot and the other person in the plane turned it around with some unusual maneuver, that ended up blowing lots of dirt and rocks at me...thanks a lot.
Then he took off right in front of me, so I shot the take off, too. It was so unusual and very beautiful. Shortly thereafter, my son gets back and we make plans for him to fly on President's Day. Hopefully it should be a nice day, though probably busy.
Angel, you're a brave MAMA! I'm glad that he's doing so well with his lessons. I really love reading about his progress!
