Having A Moody Blues Kind Of Day

It's been a busy week at work. When that happens, I sometimes turn to You Tube for a little distraction. I don't watch the videos, but I have them running in the backround. A bit of sonic audio relief and a change from the songs on my MP3 player. Some days, it's 30 Seconds to Mars. I especially love the acoustic versions of the driving songs they have on their 2 CD's. (Click the link on the left side of my blog, to check some of them out) For today, it was Justin Hayward and the Moody Blues. I would like to point out that if you are a Moodies fan, there are incredible cuts from a concert they performed in Paris in 1970. It has songs that I have never seen performed live and trust me, this Moodies fan has seen them perform live, close to 10 times over the years. Such songs as, Never Comes the Day, Candle of Life, Are you Sitting Comfortably, Lazy Day and Tortoise and the Hare! Great stuff...but I digress. :-)
I later picked up a DVD I needed to check and figured the music would work just as well as the You Tube videos I had been listening to and I slipped it into the player and listened. Mostly standards, but after about the first 7 songs, along comes a Moody Blues song! I was like, "Say What?" How did that happen? It was actually a nice suprise for me...and the singer wasn't bad at channeling Justin Hayward. either.

I guess I was destined to have a Moody kind of day.

Side note: If you like The Moody Blues and missed this post about Forever Autumn, check it out.

  1. As you know, Angel, I've been to about 3x or 4x as many Moodies shows over the years than I have Steely Dan shows. I like'em both lots, course, but that attendance discrepancy is mostly due to time and circumstances beyond my control.

So, uh, if I may be so bold as to ask...

What's the DVD? Or at least what's the name of the artist and what Moodies song is he doing?

You got me curious. And I wonder if a friend of mine who I usually characterize tongue-in-cheekily as "the biggest Moodies fan on the eastern seaboard" is aware of it....

  3. Hi Angel...

I've been kind of scarce of late, I know—taking one of my virtual vacations in which I try to stay away from things computerish more than usual, you know, other than the usual minimal daily surfing of certain sites.

Been meaning to get back to you for a while on this topic. I did indeed catch the Celtic Thunder show, well, some of it anyway. (BTW, I assume it's OK to mention the show by name because my local PBS stations have shown it about a gajillion times in the past two weeks.)

I really liked the guy's version of "Nights In White Satin" (although the CC said "Knights!"). Not all that different from the way Justin and the Moodies do it, so it was quite good. Even his vocal style was close enough to Justin's.

As for the rest of show, well, I started out watching it the first night it was on, but to be honest I didn't care too much for the theatricalness of the productions. The music was alright, but I could have done without the flinty stares and all that wandering around and posturing which just aren't my cup o' tea for some reason. So I ended up switching the channel when it was time for one of my other regular shows and then went back to the tape later to catch the performance of "Nights" which I really did enjoy. So thank you again for pointing it out as I wouldn't have known about it otherwise. It's always interesting to see others cover well known songs from those artists, either Steely or Moody, we love.

  4. Hey Dim Skip!

I still have not caught the last segment of the show at all, but did watch the first 3 at home. I too found something lacking and kind of expected more from the production. What I did like was when they did songs that were pure Celtic or historical. Like I am assuming here that it's Ireland's anthem, but without delving more into it, I can't be sure. I think the song ended segment 3. I particually liked that one.

Puppy Love, I can do without. lol
